ENTAILMENT INTRODUCTION 1

In pragmatics (linguistics), entailment is the relationship between two

sentences where the truth of one (A) requires the truth of the other (B).
For example, the sentence (A) The president was assassinated. entails
(B) The president is dead.

She killed the goat so the goat has died

Entailment is present here because the truth of A requires the truth of B: if

I am not currently living, then I cannot age, and therefore I will not turn 28
this year. The truth of A requires the truth of B, and this is the very
definition of the concept of entailment. 

PRESUPPOSITION 4 EXAMPLES

In the branch of linguistics known as pragmatics, a presupposition (or PSP) is an implicit

assumption about the world or background belief relating to an utterance whose truth is taken
for granted in discourse. Examples of presuppositions include:

a. The King of France is bald >> There is a unique King of France

b. John knows that Baird invented the television >> Baird invented the television

c. John regrets that he kissed Mary >> John kissed Mary

d. Mary has stopped beating her boyfriend >> Mary has been beating her boyfriend
