Guiding Principles for teaching and learning MTB-MLE

1. Known to the Unknown

Example scenario: The grade 1 teacher is teaching her students English words, and she is describing the
new words using her students’ mother tongue.

Teacher Ana: Ok class, ito ay patatas, sa English naman ay potato.

2. Language and academic development

The teacher gives her students a task where her students will bring story books that is written in two
language and make them read it. After they are going to discuss in front what they have understand.

3. Cognitive development

Before the teacher starts the story telling she ask her students if they have an idea about the characters or
objects in the story, and if not she would give information about the characters or object for her student
to have a prior knowledge in the story that they will discuss. And after the teacher finished her
discussion she give her students an assignment about their reflection and insights to the lesson that they
have discuss.

4. Discovery learning
Teacher Ana: do you know about different types of flower?
What flower do you know?
Students: Suntan Ma’am
Gaugamela ma’am
Teacher Ana: Ok so let’s go outside and find flowers that you already know. And after were going
to share it in front ok.

5. Active learning

Teacher Ana gives a by group activity about how her students celebrate their Christmas break.
Each one of them will share their experience.

6. meaning and accuracy


Teacher Ana is showing a flashcard to her students where her students can see the words and picture. At
the same time she’s making a story about the objects that she is showing to her students.
7. Language learning / language transfer
Teacher Ana makes her students listen to her story and after that she would give them an assignments
about the story. She would encourage her students to write it in English. And give them a star mark for
trying.

8. Affective component: Valuing the home language/ culture


Teacher Ana is using indigenous material for her music class, like kawayan or bao as an alternative for
her students to enjoy.
