Activity 2.3

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB): Warm cushion chairs and Sherlock Holmes
Instruction: Imagine you are a detective and you are tasked to investigate where the following
events took place:

Event 1: Buffet Party – the guests left their seats in random order
Event 2: Job Interview – the applicants gradually moved towards the interviewer; the farthest seat
was empty for the longest time
Event 3: Military Class Lecture – the cadets stood and left their seats at the same time

Assume that, in all rooms, you arrived five minutes after all occupants left. You have a
thermographic camera, which detects temperature using the radiation given off by a hot object. You
snap top-view pictures of the seats in three different rooms. In addition, assume that you can use
only the temperature data from the camera to support your argument. Match the aforementioned
events with the following rooms:

Room A: The temperatures of the seat are gradually increasing, with the seat nearest to the table
being the hottest.
Room B: The seats have uniform temperature.
Room C: The seats have varying temperature in no particular order.

Event 1 Room A
Event 2 Room B
Event 3 Room C
