CONVERTING INTRAVENOUS INFUSION TO SALINE LOCK

Demo
1. Check the doctor’s order.
2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Gather all equipment. Wash your hands.
4. Prime the injection port/extension tubing with injection port
using normal saline then keep the syringe attached.
5. Apply clean gloves.
6. Assess the IV site if it is infusing. Also assess the IV site for
phlebitis or infiltration.
7. Stop the IV infusion with clamp or close the regulator.
8. Place a gauze under the IV site to absorb fluid drops.
9. Disconnect the IV tubing from the catheter. Quickly attach
the primed saline lock to the catheter hub and secure.
10. Ensure the positive pressure cap remains on the extension
tubing. Place a sterile cap on end of IV tubing if tubing will
be reconnected for later infusion.
11. Flush port with normal saline by using positive pressure.
12. Clamp the extension tubing simultaneously while
completing the flush.
13. Remove the syringe and discard.
14. Wipe top of positive pressure cap with alcohol swab.
15. Secure the saline lock with plaster.
16. Document the procedure.
