In Module 1, we discussed how we would know if the world is on an unsustainable path.

I would
like you to revisit this idea now. Has your perspective changed as a consequence of what you
have learned? Using the concepts and language we have examined in the course to write a
concise response to the question: Are we on a sustainable path? Reference a news item or
current event that has occurred since you started this course to illustrate your position (do not
forget to include a link or citation to your source).

One of the major changes in the state of the environment started to happen during the industrial
revolution. Machines and mass production were invented to ease and support human activities.
With this significant development, exploitation of the environment became drastic and harsh.
Companies started to extract resources to expand their production line faster than the rate these
resources can regenerate such as fossil fuels, forest products, and even water. If these activities
will keep for long, humanity will experience a devastating end.

Fortunately, awareness and movements towards sustainability have started to gain attention
nowadays. People become more conscious of their choices and activities. Collective small
actions and active participation have become stimuli to create positive impacts and motivation in
promoting sustainability. Even companies started to rebrand themselves to contribute to this
noble movement. Companies are shifting their business cores from capitalistic to more inclusive
and sustainable values by incorporating the welfare of their people, local communities within their
zones of operation, and the environment. In fact, as my work in an audit company that examines
sustainability efforts of companies, I can personally attest that companies are becoming more
aware of their impacts to the environment by transforming its operations into "green" ones - from
procurement, consumption, waste disposal and effluents, etc.

In general, the world is now starting to practice sustainably. Not yet there, but it's more
sustainable than ever before.
