REFLECTION PAPER

Around the world, disasters and catastrophes are on the rise. With the advancement of
technology, learning information and applying it in the arena of action is today viewed as the only viable
strategy to prevent calamities or mitigate their impacts. Our subject, Disaster Readiness and Risk
Reduction (DRRR) which is a method for detecting, assessing, and mitigating disaster hazards, plays a
vital role to lessen disaster-related socioeconomic vulnerabilities while also addressing the
environmental and other dangers that cause them. We had different topics and discussions that will
help us, Senior High school students, in attaining knowledge not just about the risks and hazards of
naturals disasters like earthquakes, floods, cyclones, tsunamis, and many more but also learning how to
be prepared and reduce the damage caused by it. The lessons and topics that our teacher in DRRR, Mr.
MJ Maroto, were discussing with us include exposures and vulnerabilities, action plans, volcano, and
earthquakes hazards and especially using a triangular bandage.

From what I have learned, many things might help me or can be useful to me. As a student and
as as the eldest son, it is very important for me to have this kind of knowledge for me to protect my little
brother in times when there’s a disaster happening especially when our parents are not home. With this
knowledge, I can apply it here immediately to be prepared and also to avoid casualties. Also, with the
things I’ve learned, I can somehow ensure my safety and as well as my family’s safety. I am very grateful
that in this subject I can recall all the things I’ve learned from the seminars and training I attended when
I was a member of a Community Emergency Response Team in junior high school such as action plans,
the preparations, and giving first aid on those who need help after a disaster.

It is truly necessary that at a young age, we, the SHS students, already have enough knowledge
on how we are going to prepare, on what we must do before, during, and after a disaster because those
calamities are unpredictable but with enough knowledge, we can lessen the impacts of it on us. I am
giving my gratitude to our teacher in DRRR because he gave all his effort and share his knowledge with
us wherein all the lectures are easy for us to absorb.
