Lesson Summary
In this lesson, introduces the apparatus and unit operations used by analytical
chemist. Quality or purity must be the topmost priority in selecting reagents, to attain
accuracy in any analysis. It is equally important the proper way of cleaning and
marking laboratory ware. There are typical analytical balances used in determining
masses. And in weighing you will encounter some errors during the process. The
weighing equipment, such as the weighing bottle, desiccators, and desiccants, and
the manipulations in weighing were tackled in this lesson. Then the filtration and
ignition of solids that includes the apparatus, filtering and igniting precipitates, the
direction in filtering, and the rules for manipulating objects. In measuring volume,
consider the units of volume, the effect of temperature, the apparatus, and its
directions in use. The general directions for calibrating volumetric glassware. And
towards the end of the lesson, the list of rules for safety in the laboratory, is
discussed.

MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION AND CHEMICAL
MEASUREMENTS
Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the tools, techniques, and chemicals terms commonly used in the
analytical laboratory.
2. Determine the uses or functions of each laboratory equipment.
3. Recognize the rules of handling chemicals, laboratory ware and rules for safety
in the laboratory.
4. Review the unit operations required in the analytical laboratory.
