The Unknown Is Our Greatest Fear

Dr. Tyson and Stephen Colbert tackled the general distrust of the people about science. Dr. Tyson
argues that it's because of the lack of understanding and complexity. At first glance, it may appear

to be a specific form of fear for complexity of science, but in reality, it is a general fear that we all
share when think of what we do not know. We Often find ourselves in our comfort zones. We do
not tend to think of the unknown, but rather of what is certain. Why do people choose not to do
something that they are unfamiliar with? Why do people like to ignore the things that they deem to
be complex or hard to understand/learn?

The truth is, we all fear the things that we do not know. We all like to crawl back in our safe space

in a realm wherein it accepts the confines of our knowledge. But deep down, we all fear the
unknown because are not sure of what it has in store for us. We fear the lack of knowledge
because it is incomprehensible, it is uncertain. We fear uncertainty on about everything, even
things as minute as this. Even when we consider ourselves well equipped and ready, we cannot
stop but to feel that things may not be as we think it is. We act threatened at the thought of what if

we are faced with things that we simply cannot comprehend or control.

We always seek activities and situations wherein we gain some form of control. We want to be
placed in a place wherein we are able to do things without the fear of being faced with the

unknown. We want to be in a situation where we are prepared and able to be certain of what would
be the outcome. I am not to be considered any different. I continue to repeat the same cycle of
actions everyday without hesitation or thought given as to why. I do not even stop for a moment to
consider if I wanted to do something different from my daily activities. Why? because I simply
want to stay within the things that I am certain about.

Even with passing time and our awareness of it, we choose to repeat a cycle of activities. We are
granted the comfort in knowing that we are in a realm of our expertise, our knowledge, and our
comprehension. It contradicts human exploration but also supports human satisfaction. The

opposing force to what Dr. Tyson explained and to our fear is our yearning for constant results.
Having results enables us to learn the truth, which is a common human want as it eliminates our
uncertainty. It gives us the peace of mind from our thinking whether if the result was good or bad.
And when we continue to seek these results, we always hope that it would be in a fashion where
we understand how it became what it is. Just as Dr. Tyson had explained, people distrust science
because information is being simply presented in a manner that they cannot comprehend. We are
scared of science in the same way we fear everything that we do not know.
The unknown is a concept that we all cannot comprehend. We simply avoid the idea of where we
encounter something so new that it does not register within our confines of knowledge, we think of

it as dangerous. Similar to our lives, we trap ourselves in a place of comfort, a place in what we are
secure. Somewhere where we can feel a sense of certainty and comprehesnion.
