Overview of SKS and Deloitte
SKS:
• A metal stamping manufacturer, was founded in 1959
• Supplied a variety of exhaust system components to tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers
• Main plant was located in Pontiac, Michigan with 4,50,000sqft facility Key Personnel – Jack
Skidmore, David Fletcher, Stan Janovich
Deloitte:
• In 1995, Deloitte and Touche Consulting Group was officially designated a wholly owned
subsidiary of Deloitte and Touche LLP
• Services in 4 main areas Finance, Operations, IT and Strategy Development
• McKinsey, BCG, PWC were some of the major competitors
Case Overview
• SKS was experiencing a critical cash flow shortage
• SKS was unable to maintain acceptable customer service levels
• Shipping only 77% of customer orders in time to make required delivery dates
• In April 1995 SKS found that they don’t have any luxury of time to turn around
the situation, so they hired Deloitte and Touche to get their consulting services
• Consulting group initially focused on redesigning cross-functional business
processes
Main objectives for consultants
• To develop the production scheduling rules and processes that would smooth
production
• A quick analysis of the company’s cost structure and inventory levels
• Effort to reduce both cash investment in raw material and to synchronize
production and procurement
• To design and implement a pilot of a pull- based synchronous manufacturing cell in
12 weeks as well as a new factory layout design
Assessment of Maria Chen’s Performance
• Initially it seemed that her performance was going to be very organized and
efficient
• She displayed eagerness to learn and absorb as much knowledge as she can
• Maria should have clearly communicated and confirmed the start date and project
information with all 3 personnel
• There was a communication gap between both the parties
• Maria rushed to get the results
• It was unprofessional of Maria to build a time consuming model for SKS
• She did not understand the business before reaching at any conclusion
