INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE:

This course serves to be a foundation of the Legal studies which aims at enabling the students to

understand at the outset the basics of Indian legal system, foundation of concept of law, various

methods of legal reasoning, interpretation and analysis of cases, statutes and other sources. This

course also equips a first year student to take up systematic legal research.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE:

1. To provide foundation of law and various legal concepts and enable the student to

understand at the outset the basics of Indian legal system, foundation of theory of Law.

2. To provide an understanding of concept and nature of law which paves way or a better

understanding of other legal principles.

3. To equip the students to be able to use various legal reasoning and research techniques,

various methods of interpreting a statute and analysis of cases (IRAC method) like

identifying the facts, issues and how to analyze both in line with legal theories.

4. To equip the students to take up systematic legal research and make them aware about

various techniques used in legal research including how to provide proper citations.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

As per the time table. 4 lectures per week in each division.

SKILLS EXPECTED TO BE IMPARTED:

The students after completing the course will successfully learn how to find law, how to filter the
relevant facts and apply the legal principle, how to cite various authorities and how to orient
legal writing for a specific purpose.

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE STUDENT:
