ANALYSIS OF BEGINNING READING ABILITY OF THE STUDENTS ON FIRST GRADE

CIBALANARIK 1 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT
This study aims to describe the initial reading ability of students in the first grade Cibalanarik 1
elementary school and the factors that affect the ability to read early the method used in this study is
descriptive qualitative. The data in this study were obtained from the results of initial reading ability
test, observation, interviews, and supported by documentations. The results obtained showed that all
students studied were able to pronounce the letters of the alphabet, pronounce vowels, and pronounce
consonant. Four people are not fluent on diphthong and three people cannot. meanwhile, the indicator
say that one person digraph letters is not fluent and six people cannot. in the aspects of reading
syllables, four students are able, two people are not fluent and one person cannot pronounce syllables.
In the aspects of reading words, three students are able, one person is not fluent, and three students
are not able to pronounce words. Then on the aspect of reading sentences, data was obtained that all
the students studied could not pronounce sentences. The factors affect the students initial reading
ability in the first grade Cibalanarik 1 elementary school include students who do not have an interest to
learn reading. Students do not actively respond to learning from the teacher when the learning process
takes place and students come from families who do not have the habit of reading conclusions. In this
study, the seven students studied had reading skills of 50% in th able category, 14% not fluent category,
and 36% in the unable category.
