“Cemetery of Women”

is a cartoon showcasing a particular stereotype of women. In this cartoon the

main element is gravestone maybe portraying the theme of everlasting as gravestones last for a very
long time. Text written on gravestones seems sculptured and not much effort is put in it showing
how disrespectfully woman are treated. The content of the gravestones show that woman was not
identified by themselves but rather how people see them which can be seen in the lines like
“What's-her-name: a good wife”, “She always dusted the top shelves”, “Dutiful”, “Mother of them”
and “No one ironed like mum”. Which reinforces the social stereotype of women as a housewife
who takes care of everyone, cooks for everyone and do all the household chores.
The artist has also used lines like “You could eat off her floor” and “R.I.P. She did a good roast” to
signify how good she was good at cleaning the floor that you can literally eat it and she was good at
criticizing to make it humorous and to reduce the severity of the claim. The artist used black and
white colors to preserve the overall idea of the cartoon, so it does not get affected by the colors.
Then the gravestones are surrounded by the leaves rather than flowers showing that not many
people visited the graveyard. The white leaves may signify the purity of women’s heart who tried her
hard for being a “good housewife” and the character at the top left corner is an angel who has come
to pick her up whereas, the black leaves may signify the cruelty of the society who identify women in
such a stereotypical way.
The target audience of this cartoon are people above the age of 15. As they should understand the
harsh reality of life and try to go against it and protect and respect women for who they really are.
And not believe in such stereotypes and discrimination based on gender.
