THE NEW MUSEOLOGY: ALTERNATIVES FOR THE RETURN
OF HERITAGE TO ITS CONTEXTS

Objectives
Understand how the encyclopedic
collections were constituted and observe
the main criticisms of this model, examining
the recent discussions and propositions on
the return and/or forwarding of cultural
heritage to its related contexts.
Materials and Methods
Seeking to deepen the understanding
regarding repatriation, restitution,
decentralization and cooperation for the
mobility of cultural heritage of cultural
assets were used Costa (2020), Poulot
(2013), Saliba and Fabris (2017) and Veiga
(2013) that guided the discussion on the
possibilities and challenges of these
practices.
Results
The first museums of encyclopedic
character were being established in the
capitals, concentrating the collections,
under a logic of centralizing accumulation.
From the 1970s, however, there was a
criticism and the exhaustion of this
encyclopedic model, being the institutions
that adopted it identified by specialists as
"tombs" or "temples", where the
accumulation of intellectual wealth and the
sacralization of objects prevails, that often
lost their meaning and legitimacy. Although
it is not the case to think about the closure
of encyclopedic or centralizing museums,
which are part of a vision of collectionism in
the past, it is important to think about new
models and ways of preserving history and
memory, the possibility to review processes
and reflect on alternatives for the mobility
of musealised cultural heritage.
Conclusions
Regarding the sale of holdings, museums
must have a collection policy where actions
are provided for repatriation, donation,
transfer, exchange, sale and transfer of
property, prioritizing, preferably regional
museums. As regards the origin of
collections, museums should promote the
sharing of knowledge, documentation and
holdings with the communities from which
they come.
