IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 minutes)

Good day! For today, you will learn how to present a data
set that involves measurements that are not whole numbers.
For instance, based on the poster at the right, under what
category a typhoon should be if the following speeds are given?

1. Typhoon Domeng – 102 kph

2. Typhoon Rosing – 290.4 kph
3. Typhoon

3. Typhoon Milenyo – 220.1kph

2. Super Typhoon
1. Tropical Storm
Answers:

If you find it difficult, we need to explore ways to identify the

category of a given observation. You will study now a type of
bar graph which is the histogram and a type of line graph which
is the Ogive.

D. Development (Time Frame: 100 minutes)

WHAT IS HISTOGRAM?

A histogram is a bar graph that displays the frequency of each class interval. The properties are:
1. There are no gaps between bars.
2. Bars are adjacent at the class boundaries of the intervals.
3. The class interval involves fractional measurements such as weights and heights.

Let us construct the histogram of the following data set.

The class adviser already finalized the grades of his grade 7 students. To present his data, he constructed the frequency
table below.

Class Interval Frequency

90 - 94 4
85 - 89 10
80 - 84 12
75 - 79 8
70 - 74 6

To construct the histogram,

1. Set the horizontal axis for the class intervals

and the vertical axis for the frequency (see
Figure 1)

Figure 1 Figure 2

2. Shade completely the bars that correspond to their frequencies (see Figure 2).

1 of 3
WHAT IS Ogive?

An Ogive is a type of line graph that shows cumulative frequencies. The x-axis has the class boundaries of the
class intervals while the y-axis are the possible partial sums of frequencies or cumulative frequency.

Using the same data set above, we need to complete the other details for the Ogive – the class boundaries
and the corresponding cumulative frequency of each interval.

Class Lower Class Upper Class Cumulative

Frequency
Interval Boundary Boundary Frequency
90 - 94 4 89.5 94.5 40
85 - 89 10 84.5 89.5 36
80 - 84 12 79.5 84.5 26
75 - 79 8 74.5 79.5 14
70 - 74 6 69.5 74.5 6

Try to answer the following using the Ogive at the right.

1. How many students have a grade of lower than 80?

We select the boundary 79.5 because it is lower than 80. Based on

the Ogive, the 79.5 has a plot of 14, thus there are 14 students with
grades lower than 80. We cannot select 84.5 because it is more than 80.

2. How many students have a grade of AT MOST 90?

We select the boundary 89.5 because we need grades that are 90

or lower. The plot of 89.5 is 36. Therefore, the answer is 36 students who
have a grade of at most 90.

E. Engagement (Time Frame: 85 minutes)

Learning Task 1

Based on the histogram of the results of the exam, answer the

following.
1. In which score interval the most number of students fall?
2. In which score interval does the least number of students fall?
3. What score intervals have more than 30 students?
4. What score intervals have less than 10 students?
5. Which score interval has a frequency closest to 20 students?

Learning Task 2

An interview was conducted to a group of passengers and

they were asked how long it took them to wait for their service
vehicle.
Based on the Ogive at the right, answer the following
questions.

1. How many passengers waited for at most 56 minutes?

2. How many passengers waited for at most 78 minutes?
3. How many passengers participated in the interview?
4. For what was the longest possible time that the passengers
waited?
5. How many passengers waited for MORE THAN 89 minutes?

A. Assimilation (Time Frame: 10 minutes)

Fill-in the blanks.

1. _________ is a graph that displays the frequencies wherein the observations have fractional values and the bars are
adjacent.

2. ___________is a graph that displays cumulative frequencies per class interval.

V. ASSESSMENT (Time Frame: 10 minutes)

QUIZ Direction: Encircle the letter that corresponds to your best answer.

Mario measured the amount of rainfall for one month. Based on

the histogram at the right, answer the following:

1. What is the greatest recorded amount of rainfall?

A. 4 B. 8 C. 45 D. 50
2. How many days that the rainfall was between 10 mm to 15 mm?
A. 1 B. 2 C. 10 D. 15
3. How many days that the rainfall was between 35 mm to 40 mm?
A. 1 B. 2 C. 30 D. 35

Perla would like to construct an Ogive for her data set for her
carinderia. At the right is her data set on the number of days that fall in the No. of No. of Cumulative
interval of number of customers in a day. customers days Frequency
51-60 1 ?
4. What is the cumulative frequency for the interval 51-60? 41-50 3 13
A. 1 B. 13 C. 14 D. 60 31- 40 7 10
21- 30 2 3
5. How many days that the carinderia had at most 40 customers? 11- 20 1 1
A. 7 B. 10 C. 31 D. 40

 Communicate your personal assessment as indicated in the Learner’s Assessment Card.

Personal Assessment on Learner’s Level of Performance

Using the symbols below, choose one which best describes your experience in working on each given task. Draw it in the column
for Level of Performance (LP). Be guided by the descriptions below:
 - I was able to do/perform the task without any difficulty. The task helped me in understanding the target content/ lesson.
 - I was able to do/perform the task. It was quite challenging, but it still helped me in understanding the target content/lesson.
? – I was not able to do/perform the task. It was extremely difficult. I need additional enrichment activities to be able to do/perform this
task.
