How films influenced my style

Films have always influenced fashion, the relationship between fashion houses, stylists, designers and
film studios have always been strong. Take James Dean for example, his signature look (Levi jeans,
white shirt and zip up bomber jacket) has been emulated for generations by youth showing just how
influential films can be on fashion.

When I fall in love with a film, I become a girl possessed. I will watch it on repeat until I can quote
the whole script word for word. It is to no surprise then, that I instantly become inspired by the
characters clothes and style.

The first character and character style I became obsessed with was Susanna Kaysen in ‘Girl
Interrupted’ played by Winona Ryder.

In the film her style was very simplistic, she was always wearing skinny jeans (which are still to this
day the only type of jeans I wear) and a stripy shirt or blouse. I can confidently say I own all of those
items.

Her rebellious personality shines through her style, her pixie haircut and tomboyish clothes are the
epitome of women’s liberation in the sixties.

After watching Girl Interrupted I realised that you did not need to wear tonnes of colour or
extravagant clothes to look beautiful.

Not only did Winona Ryder look stunning, her look was also realistic and timeless.

Another character which I love is Wednesday Addams. Her sombre outfits and inability to crack a
smile worryingly relate to me more often than they probably should.

The amount of times I get sent a Wednesday Addams quote about wearing black is outstanding.

Wednesday Addams wore a peter pan collar before Alexa Chung and a strictly only black outfit
before Kanye West. She is a trend setter.

Audrey Hepburn will always be one of my style icons, she reflects elegance, class and grace. She is
possibly THE queen of simplicity and minimalism.

Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ was iconic. The sunglasses, the
oversized cigarette holder, the big hats. Everything. Audrey basically owns the little black dress too,
nobody can really outshine the little black Givenchy dress she wore in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker in ‘Sex and the City’, is also one of my fashion
influences.

Carrie Bradshaw is smart, independent and also incredibly stylish. Her great wardrobe is a mixture of
haute couture and vintage. Her eccentric style always stands out and she always looks so effortlessly
chic.

I don’t know what I want more; Carrie Bradshaw’s life or her wardrobe.
