The importance of being Earnest

In this book we have the two protagonist, they call Jack and Algernon, Jack is one of the best friends
of Algernon, but in the city Jack has another name, his name in the city is Earnest, he is love with
Gwen a rich girl, and Algernon is in love with the “niece” of Jack.

Jack get engage with Gwen, but Gwen don´t know about the real name of Jack, so she called him
Earnest, and one of the reasons that she accept is because his name “is” Earnest, the mother of
Gwen, the aunt of Algernon, didn´t accept the marriage because Jack is orphan. In the other hand
we have Algernon in love with Cecily and Jack didn´t accept that Algernon is in love with her,
because her father said to protect Cecily and became her protector, and Jack think Algernon is not
the best person to marriage her, Jack to go out of the country where he lives with Cecily invent that
he has a brother called Earnest, but he didn´t want to continue with the lie and he told all to
Algernon, when Jack come back to the country to said that Earnest died he saw that Algernon get
pass of being Earnest and get engage with Cecily, this thing didn´t like to Jack, later Algernon and
Jack have an appointment to change their names to Earnest, then Gwen go to the country house and
get confuse because they think that they are engage with the same man, the protagonist come back
and “explain” the situation, at the finally we discovered that Algernon and Jack are brothers, and the
partners get married.

In my opinion :
this book is a bit male chauvinist because the author put the female character like if they were
idiots, because for the just reason that the man called Earnest they wanted to marry him, and
Algernon is like so simple, is not a very development character, but I understand that the characters
are like that because the book is from de XIX century, but apart of that the book was funny.
