With the 21st Century's rapid advancement, a lot has evolved since in the field of Architecture.

Formulating designs from paper to CAD (Computer-Aided Design) to BIM (Building Information
Modeling), which is even more disruptive. BIM is a real manifestation of some of the top disruptive
technologies in the world — Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, 3D Printing, the Internet of Things, and
Generative Design (genetic algorithm). This technology has brought in significant developments in
Engineering and Construction industry as well.

BIM technology uses a digital model that incorporates information and parameters related to building
form, structure, and systems. When completed, the building information model contains precise
geometry and relevant data required to support the design, procurement, fabrication, and construction
activities necessary to realize the building (Eastman et al. 2008). After completion, the digital model can
be used for building management and maintenance purposes.
This process has improved how architects and engineers design and construct buildings. Using BIM
authoring tools, architects and architecture students can create a digital 3D model of a building, which

allows them to see a representation of their designs and already envision how it will operate even
without the structure being built-in actuality. This 3D model can formulate information or data
leveraged outside of the authoring tool precisely.

BIM also enables advanced workflow capabilities that augment the design process, from concept to the
building’s completion. The data BIM develops through the project’s life cycle e can be leveraged to:

 Parametric relationships and model element dependency

 Computational design
 Space planning
 Energy analysis
 Light and daylight analysis
 Display complex spatial relationships
 Calculate the cost and number of required building materials
 Virtual conflict detection and resolution
 Extended Reality (ER) (such as virtual and augmented realities) and much more

BIM doesn't just offer architects or architecture students a glimpse of the building's physical features. It
is a shared knowledge resource where architects and collaborators (e.g., designers, engineers, owners,
and builders) store all their ideas and make complex calculations on the spot. Using this workflow, it can
design high-performance buildings that are efficient, forward-thinking, and future proof.

As an architecture student, being able to learn and familiarize myself with using BIM helps me design
and visualize my architectural plates. It creates a higher quality result and generates a faster and more
detailed output which enables me to see my design from a 360-degree perspective. Learning BIM as
early as now gives me an edge as this is a skill that I can use in my future profession.
