Reflection Paper on Asian Hospital Medical Center: Hospital Tour

For the third installment of our webinar, I attended a virtual tour of the different areas of
the Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC). The objective of this webinar was to
help expose the Health Allied learners to the hospital environment in AHMC. Also, give
students insights and first-hand experiences from the respective health care workers in
their field of expertise.

In this webinar, I was able to familiarize myself with the different departments of AHMC.
I was fortunate to have seven speakers discuss in-depth their course of specialty. I
learned a lot about the varied roles of a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian and the duty of
a Hospital Pharmacist. I also gained knowledge about the different jobs of a Medical
Technician and Radiologist Technician, the diverse careers in the Rehabilitating
department, and the roles and specialties of the Nursing department.

As a future health care provider, I did consider working at AHMC. However, I know that
working in a public hospital like the Philippine General Hospital is my calling. Since
working in the public health sector, I can work in a face-paced and challenging
environment. I could also use what I learn and from school to care for financially
incapable patients. With that said, I think the AHMC webinar gave me an overview of
what the hospital setting is like inside a private tertiary hospital.

In AHMC, the facility that caught my attention the most was the Nursing department
simply because nursing is the career I would like to pursue the most as a health care
worker. The other area that was like in AHMC was the Rehabilitating department. It was
interesting to see various areas and equipment used for patients with physical and
cognitive problems.

Overall, this webinar expanded my knowledge about what’s inside a private hospital.
Furthermore, I realized how I perceive the word 'hospital' as a child. I’d immediately
associate it with ‘doctors and nurses’ since that is what was the one advertised and
romanticized in the media. However, that is not the case. As I learn more about the
hospital setting I understand that it would not function without the support of the different
medical professionals, the human resources staff, and even the utility and maintenance
personnel. It is thanks to them, patients can be able to go to an environment that can
improve their health.
