GENERAL DESIGN

To address the pressing issues surrounding pig farming ever since and to
competitively adapt to the rise of technology in society, our pigpen machine is
designed to prevent the passage of pig noises and reduces foul odor which also has
a variety of other features such as scheduled automatic feeding, pigpen cleaning
and data collection of pig’s information for several purposes. This machine
consists of several components including; colored tags for pig’s identification; a
multipurpose camera that captures images for further processing, installed in an
acoustic panel for sound absorption with activated charcoal for odor absorption; a
control panel connected to the automated feeder, automated sprinklers and run by a
host computer which processes all pieces of information needed to execute the
system’s functions. It also has two major systems that produce our desired outputs.
These are the sound and noise absorption capacity installed in one of the system’s
parts and the automated system itself.
The Pigpen machine allows neighboring houses of a pig farm to be
relieved from the stress they get every day from the noisy and smelly farms.
With its multipurpose camera installed in an acoustic panel with activated
charcoal, the acoustic panel can reduce pigs’ noise levels while the activated
charcoal can lessen the stinks coming from the pigs’ manure. This
multipurpose camera is to be installed at the ceilings of the pigpen to allow the
camera to get a better view of pigs and also for a better installation location
for absorbing sounds and odor. For the acoustic panel, we are adopting the
Sound Break acoustic panel which offers great sound absorption of up to 10-
decibel reduction of reverberant noise with the appropriate number of panels.
The number of acoustic panels stationed within an area can also influence the
amount of sound reduction experienced in the area that’s why the installation
of acoustic panels in each pen can help control the noise within a pig farm.
These panels absorb sounds when sound waves travel through the air and
strike our ceiling-mounted noise-reducing panels, fiberglass fibers or foam
pores vibrate, increasing friction among the pores or fibers. These vibrations
quickly reach a point where enough friction is created for the conversion of
sound energy to kinetic (heat) energy, which is simply the energy of an object
in motion. Since kinetic energy can’t be contained, it dissipates quickly,
leaving no sound waves and naturally, no sound. On the other hand, we used
the properties of activated charcoal in reducing the odor of pigpens. Naturally,
gases such as ammonia and nitrogen are associated in swine environments
specifically coming from pig excrement. With the capability of trapping a variety
of gases, activated charcoal can help purify pigpens. There is no associated harm in
using this product because it is entirely natural which is full of millions of
microscopic holes, not just on the inside but across its surface as well resulting in
its great absorption ca. The activated charcoal filter traps odors from the air that
passes through it purifying the air as a result. The inputs here are the noise and
odor created within the pig farm and after going through the process of sound and
odor absorption, the outputs will be reduced noise levels and purified air.

From the foregoing discussion, our Pigpen machine is operated by a host

computer that contains the software programmed to execute the machine’s
functions. The function of our machine includes automated feeding of pigs,
automated pigpen cleaning, and various data analysis and collection for
monitoring purposes that can help lessen the task of pig farmers, efficiently
saving their time while producing accurate and precise information. With
regards to these functions, our pigpen machine uses a computer vision system to
analyze and process data into information to trigger its corresponding task.
Computer vision is an image or video analysis that creates knowledge inference
from digital images or videos. For our machine, inputs needed to be analyzed are
captured by the multipurpose camera installed in the pigpen’s ceiling. These inputs
gathered are then processed by the host computer and the computer then generates
inferences based on those inputs which are needed to trigger the pigpen machine’s
functions.

With this system, it allows our machine to automatically give foods to the
pigs that were exactly on basis meal at the scheduled time. This function is
triggered by a timer in the computer which is set by the farmer as to when
should the pigs be fed. The multipurpose camera installed at the ceiling will
then detects the color of the ear tags each pig has to determine the right
amount and kind of feeds that certain pig needs. Inside the automated feeder
is a weighing scale which is also connected to the computer to automatically
take the pig’s weight and record it to the database. The multipurpose camera
is also used to capture images of the pigpen for analyzing behavior patterns of
the pigs to spot issues like lameness or abnormally immobile animals, and
detecting violent behaviors like fights and flank or tail bites, and for tasks
such as counting the pig inside a unit. By doing so, pig farmers will be
informed of such occurrences and can take appropriate actions to solve them.
They can also have updated information about the number of pigs on the
farm. Our machine also comes with an automated pigpen cleaning feature
and just like the automated feeder; it is triggered by a timer programmed in
the host computer. It includes automatic sprinklers located on the area's
ground position. This implies removing organic matter, cleaning with a
detergent, drying the place, and finally disinfecting it.
