INTRODUCTION

The introduction should have two to three sentences introducing the main idea of the essay.

Supporting details are not necessary in the introduction of IELTS essays.

Sentence 1 – Paraphrase the task or write a general statement relating to the task using synonyms
of the key words used.

Sentence 2 – State your thesis (opinion or stance) on the question being asked.

Sentence 3 – Inform the reader of what the essay will discuss.

 
BODY

The body should have two supporting paragraphs including reasons to support your opinion and

supporting examples to answer the task question. Each paragraph should contain the following

five sentences and stick to one idea per paragraph:

Sentence 1 – State the topic sentence to support your opinion.

Sentence 2 – Provide reason to support your topic.

Sentence 3 – Expand on your reason.

Sentence 4 – Provide a specific example that supports your topic.

Sentence 5 – Summarize paragraph.

CONCLUSION

The conclusion should have two to three sentences paraphrasing what you’ve discussed in the

essay.

Sentence 1 – Paraphrase the thesis stated in the introduction.

Sentence 2 – Paraphrase main point in Body 1 and Body 2.  

Sentence 3 – Give a Final Thought. State an opinion on what you think will happen in the future.
