Phrasal Verbs Set Four Example Sentences

Listen to the accompanying MP3 and read these sentences. This will train your brain to
master these phrasal verbs.

Back down = to admit that you were wrong or to admit defeat


Break down = when a machine or vehicle stops working
Take off = when a plane, bird, insect or object leaves the ground and flies through the air
Stick up for sb/sth = to support and defend someone or something

After months and months of protests, the prime minister finally backed down and
apologised to the nation.

Mike: Ken, sometimes you just have to admit that you were wrong.
Ken: Absolutely not. There’s no way I’m backing down!

The two animals stared at each other and prepared to fight. Neither of them wanted to
back down and let the other win.

After I wrote a letter to the bank explaining that I shouldn’t have been charged the extra
£1000, they backed down and returned the money.

It was so scary when the ski lift broke down today. I thought we’d be stuck up there forever!

Sorry, this lift has broken down and is being repaired. Please use the other lift just over
there. Thank you.

I can’t believe it. My boiler has broken down again, and it’s the middle of winter! I think it’s
time to replace it.

My motorbike engine sounds really strange. I really hope it doesn’t break down because

George: Why should I stick up for you after what you did to me?

Joe: This new boss is really difficult to work for. He’s constantly shouting and moaning at
everyone.
Fiona: You need to stick up for yourself. Don’t let him do that to you.
