MEAN, MEDIAN AND MODE

Prepared by: Carissa Grace E. Diron

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1. Define mean, median and mode
2. Apply the concepts of mean, median and mode in real life situation
3. Compute the mean, median and mode
II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Measures of Central Tendency in Statistical Data: MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE

B. References: Grade 7 Mathematics Learning Module
C. Materials: visual aids, activity sheets, board and chalk/whiteboard, laptop and television
D. Strategies/Methods Used: Collaborative learning,

E. Values Integration: keenness, patience, activeness, analysis

III. PROCEDURE :
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES
A. Preparation (5 minutes)

“Good Afternoon Class...” “Good afternoon Ma'am!”

“Let us pray first, Aaron please lead the Aaron: are you ready to pray classmates?
prayer”
All: Yes we are.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Our Father in
heaven holy be your name, your kingdom
come your will be done. On Earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and
forgive us our sins as we forgive those who
sins against us, do not bring us to the test but
deliver us from evil. Amen”

“Good afternoon class.” All: Good morning Ma’am Carissa!

Please pick up the trashes on the floor (Students pick up trashes, put it on the trash
and arrange your chairs properly” can and arrange the chair)

(Checking of Attendance)
“I will be giving out stars then write your
name on it and pass it forward. This will serve
as your attendance and also every time I ask
question I will just pick a star from this bowl
randomly and call a name.”

“Am I understood?” All: Yes Ma’am!

Also remember that whenever you saw me All: Yes ma’am

raising my right hand, so it means that you are
so noisy and I want you to be quite and
whenever you want to answer, just raise your
right hand and wait for me to call your name.
Am I understood?

B. Motivation (5 minutes)

(Playing video clips involving mean)

What have you observed at the video?

_____: the video tells about central tendency.

That’s right ___________.

C. Presentation (5 minutes)

Okay! So be with me this morning class, as I

discuss to you about Measures of Central
Tendency

There are three Measures of Central

Tendency of Ungrouped Data and these are
Mean, Median, and Mode.

D. Discussion Proper (25 minutes)

Mean refers to the mean that is used to derive
the central tendency of the data in question.

The Formula of getting the mean:

Let’s have some examples to really

understand how to use the formula.

1. The scores of 6 students in math-7 quiz

are:
5, 8, 7, 5, 6, 5
What is the average of the scores?

What is the Mean of this data?

So, we will use the formula for getting the

mean or average:

“What is the formula of Mean?”

“Yes ________”

“Very good ______”

What is the sum of all data points?

“Yes,______”

“Are you sure?”

“Okay go on”

“Yes, very good ______”

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 6

The average of the scores is 6.

The MEDIAN is the middle entry or term in a

set of data arranged in either increasing or
decreasing order.
To find the median:
1. Arranged the data in either increasing or
decreasing order
2. Locate the middle value. If the number of
cases is odd, the middle value is the
median. If the number cases is even, take
the arithmetic mean of the two middle
measures.

Let’s try these examples:

1. The scores of 5 students in math-7
quiz are: 5, 8, 7, 6, 5
What is the mean of the scores?
So, to find the median, we first
arranged the data in either increasing
or decreasing order.

5, 5, 5, 6,7, 8, Median: 5 and 6 ma’am!

Now, looking at our arranged data,
what is the median of our data?

Very good! That is correct! And the

next thing we will do is? Anna: We will solve for the average of the two
middle value.
Yes Anna?

Correct! And the result is? Jo-an: 5.5 Ma’am, the median is 5.5.

Yes Jo-an?

Mode. Another measure of position.

The mode is the measure or value that
appears most frequently in a set of
data.
To find the Mode:
1. Select the measure that appears
most in the set of data;
2. If two or more measures the same
number of times then each of
these values is a mode;
3. If every measure appears the same
number of times, then the set of
data has no mode. (They raised their hands)
Example:
1. What is the mode of the given set of Paul: The mode is 7 Ma’am.
data: 5,6,7,7,7,8,9,1,2,3?
Yes, Paul?

That is correct! Outstanding!

E. Drill/Enrichment Activities (15 minutes)

“To further enhance your knowledge, let’s do

some examples on the board. I want those
who haven’t answered to participate in this
practice.

Solve the mean, median and mode of the

following:

1. The number of marbles owned by the

5 students.
(Students participated in the boardwork.) the
25, 17, 10, 6, 7
students start with their activity)
2. The grades of 7 students in math third
quarter.

90, 89, 84, 92, 96, 85, 87

3. The score of 7 students in English test:
14,15,11, 13,10, 15,12
4. The grades of 5 students in math
second quarter:
90, 89, 84, 92, 96
5. The score of 6 students in English test:
82, 93, 92, 83, 77, 86

F. Application (5 minutes)

I will divide this class into 3 groups.

All you have to do is to list down the
ages of your members and find its
mean or average. Choose one
representative from your group to show
your outcome later. I will give you 5
minutes to do it.

“Okay time is up. Group 1 present your

outcome.” Group 1 leader presents their outcome.
Very good group one, let’s give them a
fireworks clap. Do you know how to
execute it? “No ma’am”
“Okay, so here it goes.” (executing the
fireworks clap)
They do the fireworks clap.
Group 2 leader, show us your work.
Group 2 leader presents their work.
Excellent group 2, let’s give them a
round of applause.
They execute the clap.
Last but not the least the Group 3.

Very good group 3. Let’s give them Group 3 leader present their outcome.
Boom snap clap.
They execute the Boom-snap clap.
G. Generalization (3 minutes)
Watch video.
.

IV. EVALUATION

1. Joan’s grades in Third quarter are:
85, 90, 83, 88, 86, 83, 83
What is the Mean, and median of her grades?
2. The height of 5 basketball players are:
6ft., 5ft., 6ft., 7ft., 5ft.,
What is the Mean of their height?
3. The weight of 6 men are:
50kg, 48kg, 50kg, 56kg, 53kg, 62kg
What is the Mean and mode of their weight?
