1.For what type of audience was this written?

The text is aimed at all types of audiences, as the information contained in the text is easy to
understand thanks to the fact that the text does not use technical language and does not use
any type of statistical data or information that focuses on a specific topic.

2. What assumptions does the author make about the background

knowledge of the audience?

The author assumes that the audience to whom he refers will understand everything the text
says, because he makes use of a common language among the population and deals with a
topic that is generally known to people by general culture, what the author does is to
complement the previous knowledge that the audience has.

3. What is the author’s purpose?

The main purpose of the author is to inform the audience about an issue that is of concern and
that develops in a specific place, and at the end of the text the author proposes a possible
solution to the problem.

4. How is the problem introduced?

The problem present in the text is largely due to the high amount of toxic substances resulting
from the recycling and waste disposal center, which cause diseases in the inhabitants of
nearby homes and recyclers, in addition to causing problems to the environment.

5. To what does this growth in Sentence 3 refer? What are these

processes in Sentence 10? To what does this approach in Sentence

12 refer? What is the effect of these particular expressions on the

flow of ideas?

The growth mentioned in sentence 3 refers to the economic development of the country of
Ghana, the processes mentioned in sentence 10 refers to the actions of the major e-waste
recycling and disposal center which consist of; disassembling electronic devices, burning plastic
covered items in order to recover valuable metals. The approach referred to in sentence 12
refers to the installation of sustainable recycling technology that can drastically reduce
exposure to toxins. As for the words mentioned; the word "growth" is part of the introduction
of the text: it gives us an idea of how the situation is in the country where the recycling and
waste disposal center exists, the word "processes" is part of the body of the text, here it shows
us how the recycling and waste disposal center works and finally the word "approach" is
located in the last paragraph of the text where a possible solution to the health and
environmental problems caused by the recycling and disposal center is proposed.

6. What does the author think of the two solutions?

The author believes that, although the implementation of sustainable recycling technology can
drastically reduce exposure to toxins, it can be costly to implement. On the other hand, if
electronics manufacturers reduce the amount of toxic materials used to manufacture their
products it could be a more viable solution as the problem would be solved at its root.

7. If the writer had thought that the second solution would not
work, what might she have written for the last sentence? In such

a case, would this last sentence be enough to complete the text?

If not, what would need to be added?

In my opinion, I believe that a possible solution could be the implementation of policies to

control the use of toxic materials and substances by manufacturers, in this way each
manufacturer will be obliged to comply with the law and reduce environmental and health
problems, in addition to the policies, manufacturers can also install recovery centers for
products with no useful life of the manufacturing company itself.
