As the number of cars and drivers on the road increased, so did the need for better safety measures.

Stop signs were no longer keeping drivers and pedestrians safe, so traffic signals were introduced.

Lighted traffic signals were able to be seen in the dark and from farther distances, allowing drivers to
slow down or stop with more accuracy.

As optics technology advanced, so did the discipline’s use in traffic lighting.

The early incandescent bulbs have been replaced by longer-lasting, brighter-burning LED bulbs. This
more advanced technology allows lights to be seen farther away, improving safety, and decreasing the
amount of times public works employees have to replace the bulbs.
