Adjectives

What is the function of an adjective in a sentence?

The function of an adjective is describing an object or a person. Adjectives are used to

highlight qualities. Eg.
She is beautiful.
She is tall.
She is Smart (Intelligent)
She is small.
She is Colombian.

An adjective can be: Size, length, Color, Nationality, Purpose (Propósito del objeto),
appearance, Material.

The comparative degree.

1. Superiority comparisons.
Highlight a quality of an object or a person, and make a contrast with another person
or object.
Structure: the adjective, which is in the comparative form (er) (double consonant +
er) (more), is followed by “Than”
[Noun + Main/mein/ verb + Adjective (comparative form) + Than +
Noun/naoun/]

Examples:
Juan is fast.
Juan runs faster than mark.
Nate is more beautiful than martha.
Julio is smart
Julio is smarter than Martha and Nate.
Julio runs faster than the rest of the team.
 2. Inferiority comparisons.

Structure: In this type of comparison we use conjunctions “not as… as” or “less…
than.” In this case, the adjective is in its base form.
[Noun + Main verb + Not as + Adjective (base form) + as + noun]
[Noun + Main verb + Less + adjective (base form) + than + noun]
Examples:
Mark is not as fast as Juan
Sue’s room is less clean than Angela’s

3. Equality comparisons.

Structure: In this type of comparison we use conjunctions “as… as” In this case, the
adjective is in its base form.
[Noun + Main verb + as + Adjective (base form) + as + noun]

Examples:
Mark is as fast as Juan

The superlative degree

It denotes quality in the highest degree. The superlative form is (est) (most).

Comparative form: Juan runs faster than mark

Superlative form: Juan is the fastest.

[Noun + Main verb + Adjective (Superlative form)]
