1
Jonas is an 11 year old boy. He is the
main character.
In Jonas’ family, he has a sister named Lily, his mom, and his
dad.
Jonas’ dad is a Nurturer. A Nurturer, in his community, is
someone who takes care of the health of babies.
Jonas’ mom worked at the Department of Justice. The
Department of Justice is responsible for criminals and laws.
Jonas and his family talk about how they felt that day
around the table.
Jonas’ dad said that he felt worried, because there was a
baby who needs extra care because he is too small.
Jonas said he felt apprehensive. Jonas said he was
apprehensive because of the Ceremony of Twelve.
The Ceremony of Twelve is a ceremony in the community
when the Elevens turn Twelve. At the Ceremony, the receive
their jobs for the rest of their lives.
Jonas’ mom and dad said they needed to have a private talk
with Jonas.

during breakfast.
Jonas described his very unusual dream that he had.
Jonas’ mother said that those were Stirrings, and to get rid
of them, Jonas must take a pill every morning.

skipping Jonas.
She said that Jonas was not assigned a job. Instead, he was
selected as the Receiver of Memory
Now, Jonas has a list of rules he needs to follow.
The Rules:
-Go straight to work everyday after school
- Go straight home everyday after work
- He can ask any question to anyone
- Do not talk about work to anyone
- He can not tell anyone about your dreams
- He cannot get medicine for work
- He may lie
Jonas’s job now is to keep all the memories ever in case
anyone ever needs them.

work.
Jonas’ father told him about twins that were being born.
Since twins aren’t allowed, it’s Jonas’ father’s role to weigh
