What does his statement mean?

- In lines 18-23, when the authors says “our destinies are linked” it means that the
author’s destiny is related with Papa Doc because Papa Doc was the one that make
them live in New York. Jeans also says that if Papa Doc leaves he would also leave
because he doesn't want him to go. According to lines 21 - 22, Jean says that he
doesn't know Papa Doc but even though their destinies are linked. Also, based to
lines 22 - 23, the author says that if Papa Doc leaves he would leave, but he does
not want him to leave. Therefore, the motivation or the reason at this moment for
Jean to be in New York is the ruthless dictator Papa Doc.

2. How do the author's feelings about Haiti differ from the feelings of the older generation,
including his father's?

- The author’s feelings about Haiti differ from the feelings of the older generation,
including his father’s because the feelings he had of Haiti are not too strong because
he doesn't remember anything of Haiti meanwhile he has all in New York his friends,
his teachers, and his baseball team. His father want to go back to Haiti now that
Papa Doc a monster for them is living of New York. According to line 18, I have no
memory of Haiti. No memory of my crib in Port-au-Prince. Also, based to lines 32 -
35, I understand who Duvalier is. An evil man. A thief murdered. A man who tried to
have my father killed. Therefore, the author doesn't have memories of Haiti, he has
most of his things in New York, and his father want to go back to Haiti because he
doesn't feel well in New York because Duvalier.

between Italy and Haiti, and explain his reaction to this event.

- The author’s account of the World Cup soccer match between Italy and Haiti, that
explain his reaction to this event are that Haiti had no hope since Italy obtained the
legendary Dino Zoff, but when the second time had started Haitians scored a goal.
Later on Italy tie the score and then they win 3-1 but the Haitians still happy for the
goal they scored. According to lines 115 - 116, the Italians are in shock. The World
Cup is in shock. Haiti leads 1-0. Also, based on lines 126 - 128, those six minutes
mean more to me than all the victories of my favorite baseball team. Therefore, Jean
was very happy for the score that Haiti made to Italy, as Italy has won the World Cup
2 times and Haiti scored a goal to Italy.

- The last paragraph of the section relates to the central idea or main idea, considering
details about sports and celebrations that appeared early in the essay because now
that Duvalier leave the city. They could have liberty and make an exciting celebration
because the Mets wins. So, Jean will stay in New York now that the Mets had won.
According to lines 138 - 140, the city celebrates with a tickertape parade attended by
over two million people. Also, based on lines 140 - 141, a pale celebration indeed,
compared to the celebrating that took place earlier in the year. Therefore, people
could have liberty to celebrate when the Mets won now that Papa Doc had left the
city and now no one will be forcing people to make things.

EXAMPLE: Details from the lines text that explain why New York feels more like home than
Haiti are that Jean's friends and teachers are in New York. He also doesn't have any
memory of Haiti. He feels that it is dangerous to go back to Haiti. According to lines 19 - 24,
it says that Jean’s friends and teachers live in New York and he thinks that his schooling is
important. Also, based on line 18, the author says that he doesn't have any memory of Haiti.
Therefore, Jean feels comfortable in New York because he has his friends and teachers
there and he doesn't want to leave because it feels like home.
