Computer Operating Systems

What is an operating system?

An operating system is a software that controls the hardware that is installed in a
computer (e.g. utilization of the discrete graphics card for use during games).

There are three major types/providers of operating systems:

1. Windows
2. MacOS
3. Linux

--------

> Windows Operating System

It is the most popular and widely used operating system in the entire world, and
all known hardware supports the Windows operating system. Created by the tech
giant, Microsoft, it is usually seen installed on all major pre-built computers in
the market.

> Macintosh Operating System

Otherwise known as MacOS, it is the second most popular operating system used by
computer users. Unlike Windows, the MacOS can only be seen installed on Apple
products.

> Linux Operating Systems

It is an operating system that is open source (i.e. anybody can modify the code of
the system), and is free to install. Unlike Windows and MacOS, Linux-based
operating systems can be installed on a variety of computers -- even on older
systems such as a Pentium 4 desktop computer.
