• Set out operator requirements
• Achieved consensus on use
of TR-069 management
protocol
• Created femto-specific data

TR-69 Architectural Framework

Andy Germano, Vice Chairman, Femto Forum. SUPERCOMM ATIS Technology Conference October 21, 2009 15
Benefits of TR-069
• TR-069 is already widely used in fixed broadband
networks and in set-top boxes and allows mobile
operators to simplify deployment and enable
automated remote provisioning, diagnostics-checking
and software updates.
• TR-069 also uses a combination of security measures
including IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange v2) and IPsec
(IP Security) protocols to authenticate the operator and
subscriber and then guarantee the privacy of the data
exchanged

3GPP Release 8 Completion
• The completion of the release 8 Home Node-B (UMTS femtocell)
specification was a major achievement for the industry, providing
clarity on the roadmap and enabling operator deployments in the
short term
• Many vendors already announcing full support for the standard

Andy Germano, Vice Chairman, Femto Forum. SUPERCOMM ATIS Technology Conference October 21, 2009 18
What is covered by the 3GPP Rel. 8?

The new femtocell standard covers four main areas:

• network architecture;
• radio aspects
• interference aspects &
• femtocell management / provisioning and security

The crucial interface between potentially millions of

femtocells and gateways in the network core is called Iuh.

Andy Germano, Vice Chairman, Femto Forum. SUPERCOMM ATIS Technology Conference October 21, 2009 22
TR 25.820 concluded
• Home Node Bs will not degrade the performance of networks deployed
in other channels.
• Dedicated carrier deployment of Home Node Bs is feasible for both
open and closed subscriber group systems in a wide range of
deployment configurations.
• Co-channel carrier deployment of Home Node Bs is feasible for both
open and closed subscriber group systems.
• Home Node Bs can provide reasonable performance whether deployed
in isolation or whether multiple Home Node Bs are deployed in the
same area.
• Home Node Bs can be engineered to radiate only when it is confirmed
that such an emission complies with regulatory requirements in force
where that Home Node B is operating.
• Home Node Bs can support UE speeds up to 30 km/h.
