A crown block is the stationary section of a block and tackle that contains a set of pulleys or
sheaves through which the drill line (wire rope) is threaded or reeve and is opposite and above
the traveling block.

2: Travelling Block:
A traveling block is the freely moving section of a block and tackle that contains a set of
pulleys or sheaves through which the drill line (wire rope) is threaded or reeve and is opposite

3: Top Drive System (TDS):
A top drive is comprised of one or more electric or hydraulic motors, which is connected to the
drill string via a short section of pipe known as the quill. Suspended from a hook below the
traveling block, the top drive is able to move up and down the derrick.

5: Monkey Board:
A monkey board is an elevated platform on a drilling rig where a crew member called a
Derrickman works while running the drill string – a string of drill pipe – into the borehole or
pulling it out.

6: Stabbing Board::
A temporary platform erected in the derrick or mast some 20 to 40 ft (6-12 12 m) above the

being run in a well. The board may be wooden or fabricated of steel girders floored with
anti-skid
skid material and powered ele
electrically
ctrically to be raised or lowered to the desired level. A
stabbing board serves the same purpose as a monkey board but is temporary instead of
permanent.

7: Floor:
The floor is a relatively small work area in which the rig crew conducts operations, usually
adding or removing drill pipe to or from the drill string. The rig floor is the most dangerous

tungsten carbide, and/or synthetic or natural diamonds) and sharp teeth that cut into the rock.

2: Stabilizer:
A drilling stabilizer is a piece of down hole equipment used in the bottom hole assembly (BHA)
of a drill string. It mechanically stabilizes the BHA in the borehole in order to avoid un intentional

3: Drill Collar:
Drill collars are thick-walled tubular pieces machined from solid bars of steel, usually plain

alloys. The bars of steel are drilled from end to end to provide a passage to
pumping drilling fluids through the collars.

4: Drilling Jar:
A jar is a tool that sits on the drill string. If the drill string (BHA) gets stuck in the hole,
the jar can help knock it loose by generating quick, sharp hammer-like blows. Jars look
like drill collars, but inside they are sliding mandrels that allow brief and sudden acceleration of
the drill string above the jar.

5: Heavy Weight Drill Pipe:
Standard Heavyweight Drill Pipe (HWDP) was developed to provide a gradual transition
from heavy drill collars to relatively lightweight drill pipe. This intermediate weight pipe has a
wall thickness of approximately one inch, and helps prevent stress concentration at the top
of drill collars.

Poor Boy Degasser:
Poor Boy Degasser or Mud Gas Separator, located downstream of the choke manifold, is a
vertical vessel used to separate any gas from drilling fluid during well control situation. Once the
gas has been separated, it can pass through the vent line in the derrick.

A mud tank is an open-top container, typically made of steel, to store drilling fluid on a
drilling rig. They are also called mud pits, because they used to be nothing more than pits dug

Components of Mud Tank:

Mud Motor:
The power section of a mud motor consists of a rotor and stator. These two components
harness the pressure and flow of the drilling fluid and translate it into torque and rpm that spins
the drill bit. Thus, a mud motor provides simultaneous rotary cutting action and steering.

Lifting Sub:
Lift subs are used to lift BHA components such as drilling motors, jars, shock tools, drill collars,

tool.

Bit Breaker:

Mud Pump:
A drilling rig mud pump is used to circulate drilling fluid or drilling mud into the bore hole to help
cool, lubricate and clean the drill head as it bores into the ground. The drilling mud is also used
to suspend and carry out drill cuttings from the drill head as it is brought in and out of the hole.
This ensures that the drill does not clog and overheat, and makes the entire drilling operation
smooth and safe.

mechanical power into fluid circulation or agitation. The objective is to obtain a uniform
suspension of all solids.

Possum Belly:
A Possum belly, on a drilling rig, is a metal container at the head of the shale shaker that
receives the flow of drilling fluid and is directly connected to and at the end of the flow line. A
possum belly may also be referred to as a distribution box or flow line trap. The purpose of the
possum belly is to slow the flow of the drilling fluid (after it has gained momentum from coming
down through the flow line) so that it does not shoot off of the shale

Flow Line:
The flow line is simply an inclined, gravity-flow conduit to direct mud coming out the
top of the wellbore to the mud surface-treating equipment. When drilling certain highly
reactive clays, called "gumbo," the flow line may become plugged and require
considerable effort by the rig crew to keep it open and flowing.

Bell Nipple:
A Bell nipple is a section of large diameter pipe fitted to the top of the blowout preventers that
the flow line attaches to via a side outlet, to allow the drilling fluid to flow back over the shale
shakers to the mud tanks.

Diesel Generator:

Kelly Bushing:
Kelly bushing is that elevated device positioned right on top of the rotary table and used to
transmit torque from the rotary table to the Kelly. The Kelly bushing is designed to be the
connection between the rotary table and the Kelly. The Kelly is a 4 or 6 sided steel pipe.

tool is an important part of handling tools and is located within the rotary table on a rig.
