LITERATURE REVIEW 2

The literature review is key to any research study or article development

The literature review is an important aspect of the research process. Through it, one gains

insight on the research that is already existing in the topic of study; and is able to determine

which of all the available literature is relevant to the particular area of study. In particular, the

literature review allows the researcher to rest the new ideas or concepts on the foundation of

previously existing research. Therefore, by conducting a literature review, one is able to: identify

any gaps in research; identify new ways using which to interpreted previous research; identify

and resolve any conflict that may appear from previous research; help prevent duplication; show

the areas within the topic that require further research; and most importantly to connect the new

ideas to the others held in the field.

All these are very important factors in research, and in the development of any article. In

particular for the audience, because they are guided through the topic and the newly presented

concepts through the details garnered from the literature review. This is because they may be

new to the topic or they may not have an in-depth knowledge of the topic.

Therefore, literature relevant to a topic can be obtained from any other discipline as long

as it is in line with the topic or field of study. Disciplines that may compliment research in

nursing include sociology, and social sciences; psychology; and business (management,

leadership, teamwork, organizational change). The most important aspect of the literature

review, is how it is presented. And regardless of the discipline where the literature is derived, as

long as it holds merit and is properly presented then it will form a good foundation for research.

The literature review must therefore be presented in a manner that is unbiased,

comprehensive, and in great consideration of the audience. It must be current, relevant and

essential to the topic. Despite being a literature review, it must indicate individual thinking; and

be properly cited.
