Methods for teaching reading and arithmetic that were widely adopted to measure
ability in reading, arithmetic, handwriting, drawing, spelling, and English composition.
Educational psychology demonstrates that whole language approaches to reading and writing
are most effective in preschool and kindergarten because they improve student’s motivation
and interest and help them understand the nature and purposes of reading and writing.
Phonemic awareness the sense that words are composed of separate sounds and that sounds
are combined to say words in kindergarten and first grade predicts literacy in later grades. If
children do not have phonemic awareness in the early grades, direct teaching can dramatically
improve their chances of long-term achievement in literacy.
