Correct Rhythm Use of Metronome Dynamics Relaxation Daily Use Flexibility for Tuba ‘The studies in this book are designed to help tubists develop and maintain flexibility. These studies have been shown to be effective for players at all levels of proficiency when they are used correctly. & It is most important to play these studies in perfect rhythm. The rhythm must be even when slurring up and when slurring down, I feel that playing these exercises evenly is more important than playing them quickly. If you play these evenly at a moderate tempo they will be easy to perform at a faster tempo. Work for correct rhythm at a slow tempo for a long time before at- tempting to increase the speed. * It is a very good idea to use a metronome when practicing these studies. ‘The metronome will be a constant reminder of the correct tempo and will help point out uneven playing. Use the light on the metronome and watch the light instead of looking at the music. Use a subdivided beat whenever possible. The light and the subdivided beat will make it easier to spot uneven playing. ‘These studies should be played at all dynamic levels. Don’t just play them mezzo forte. Try playing them fortissimo and piano. You may use crescendos and diminuendos to help improve your control. Players today need dependable flexibility and control in all volume ranges. * After each exercise is practiced I suggest playing one exercise and one etude from Low Register Development for Tuba. This will help relax the embouchure and develop low register control. * ‘Some of these studies should be practiced each day. The amount of practice you may need will depend on many factors. A player that has well developed flexibility may practice these studies five or ten minutes each day. Players that want to improve their level of flexibility will want to practice these studies much more. I think that thirty minutes a day is about enough time for anyone to spend on this type of work. 2 © 1989 Encore Music Publishers SS aE NENG NENG NGG Sa NG NG NG NENG NGG SI I SITING oN pI aA A I I a a a oN pS AS AT ED IS a a a eee EV EVE EVE EE mo pS I EY SV IY I a os d PY ED EU a a a a a AY bY aod oN IST dy ey ay ae a = oN Ne Ne Nee Oe Ce CEN 10 11 12 13 14
