Media and information is a complex set of systems and an array of information presented through
various mediums.

An understanding of the purpose, goals, aims and craft of creating media is required. Media must be
evaluated, and the consumer must be able to identify types of media and the goal of the creators in
creating and presenting the media.

Media Literacy Project | Access. Analyze. Create. provides this definition of media literacy. Media
Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Media literate youth and adults are
better able to understand the complex messages we receive from television, radio, Internet, newspapers,
magazines, books, billboards, video games, music, and all other forms of media.

Information literacy is simply the ability to evaluate the merit of the information, know where to find the
information needed and use and curate it to aid in numerous tasks and purposes. Weslyan University
provides this definition: Information literacy is a crucial skill in the pursuit of knowledge. It involves
recognizing when information is needed and being able to efficiently locate, accurately evaluate,
effectively use, and clearly communicate information in various formats.weslyan.

Originally Answered: What makes an individual literate in media and information?

One becomes literate in media/information by understanding how each works.

For example, media are “texts” designed to be read, analyzed, created, deconstructed and re-
constructed. Media languages and media techniques are used, so one should become familiar with both
of those and how they work. Photographs, for example, are primarily visual so understanding visual
literacy might be important. Newspapers (in print) rely on images and words. (The news literacy
movement is aimed at helping students and others understand the work of journalists, for example.) TV
and movies depend on visuals and sound, so understanding the “language of the moving image” would
be essential. Video games go one step further in interactivity. Who benefits from media/information
would also be important to consider. Individuals should also be aware that both media/information
depend on audiences and advertising for survival.

Being able to do the following, even at a beginner stage, would demonstrate media and information
literacy:

1. Accessing media and information: Using technical skills for accessing suitable media and information
sources

2. Using media and information: content decoding skills and responsible strategies for applying content
to one’s daily life. The knowledge has no use to you until you find ways to put it into practice.

3. Evaluating media and information: This is the ability to judge the credibility, accuracy and objectivity of
sources. This is especially important when you are a student preparing a research paper, an employee
doing a presentation for your higher ups or even pitching to future investors. Taking the time to check
the credibility and accuracy of the information you are sharing is very important

4. Creating media and information: critical attitude and skills in how to construct media and information.
This is also another excellent way to demonstrate your understanding of the media and information you
are utilizing.

5. Participating in media: critical attitudes and knowledge of where and how to interact with journalists
and editors of media, as well as with other citizens via old and new media

6.Knowing how media work: knowledge about media and information systems, organizations, routines
and effects

7. Demanding media quality and rights: critical demand for and defense of good media and information
sources

Having sufficient experience in each of the tenets above, even at a lower level, qualifies someone to be
referred to as media and information literate. A synthesis of the above is the overall main goal.

Originally Answered: What makes an individual savvy in media and information?

Excellent question. I like the word savvy better than words like successful, popular or watched. Savvy
gives the idea that we all care that the media person is good at what they do, not simply good at getting
our attention. It gives the idea of an even better word- professional.

The skills that make a media person savvy are essential to the survival of our civilization. The person who
has the skills to find out what is really going on and tell us are crucial to everything. Those skills include
the ability to:

1. do research objectively and with discipline

2. write accurately and clearly

3. resist the first answer, the popular answer and pressure from sources and editors

4. ask tough questions

5. admit being wrong about a story

6. NEVER start a story with a certain narrative or political view in mind

7. use a variety of technological tools and communication platforms

8. talk to people and listen

There are more . These used to be criteria for reporters. But in the Cablenews and blogosphere, numbers
1, 3,4,5 and especially 6 are very rare to non-existent.

Some do number 8 well but today’s media is about talking and telling, not about listening and finding
out. I have always been a critic of the media. I am NOT joining the kill the messenger foolishness that
seems to have overwhelmed our culture. Every day I hear absolute nonsense spouted by the president
of the United States and many others. The media sources that do the best are the ones who promote
total lies and find new ways to spin them. While this absurdity is center stage our culture and future are
changing for the worse behind the scenes at an alarming rate.

Ask yourself, how many of my little list does your media source do? I never thought I would live to see
the most popular media outlet act as the official mouthpiece of the federal government and the party
that controls that government in entirety. And even if I had imagined this during my reporting days I
would never have believed so few would notice or care.

As far as the media, the big problem is the total failure of the modern market based model. When I
started it was custom for 75 years NOT to produce a Saturday paper for the benefit of the staff and for
admitting that there really isn't 7 days worth of big news in medium sized towns. When the GOP
greedster business model took over, that went out the window, along with real pay for journalists.
(Democrats are also to blame but GOPERs exempt themselves unless you call them out).

The market model was in complete control in the 1990s when I was editor of several papers making the
transition from pasteup to pagination on the computer. This could have been a good thing but corporate
greedsters were determined to eliminate thousands of jobs during this transition and try to create news
without journalists based on the computer’s ease of use. And they were making 30 percent profits at the
time but wanted more! Proofreaders were once crucial to newspapers. These positions were entirely
eliminated. We were allowed to offer paginator jobs to proofreaders and wordsmiths but they had to be
computer whizzes. Few were. Even those that could spent little or no time on proofreading as the bean
counter job squeeze took over. During the corporate takeover of all papers in the 1990s they all decided
to destroy “morgues” which every newspaper had. These were full records of the community better than
anything in the town library. Corporations decided they were non profitable and trashed them, along
with all the roomfuls of old newspapers. At my newspaper our ownership did this in the dead of night
and threw away reprints of the Virginia city newspaper that were the only copies of Mark Twain’s articles
during a certain period there.

I hope I didn't abuse your question. Savvy is what we need instead of blowhards and partisans.

Read a lot , things that talk about the current affairs. news, blogs, books, magazines what ever you can

Find 1 or two people who talk about philosophy of life in the current scenario and who give examples

Originally Answered: Why is it important to be a media and information literate?

Being media and information literate is important for several reasons. It’s important so one is able use
current and past information and media with intelligence. It’s important to be able to navigate through
various types of media with success. I think it is important to know where to find the best source of
information for your needs. Being able to evaluate information and a) decide if it is the best source and
the right info for your purpose and b) find other similar sources of information of the same type is key to
navigating through all the information that is now available to us.

It is important for job and employment success.

It is important in our day to day lives to be able to process the information we are presented with
through various types of media and carry on in an intelligent way given the information we have. A very
simple example is a weather report or an advertisement about a food product. Where did I get my info?
Is it a good source? Does it make sense? If I dress for rain and it’s 80 degrees and sunny, I may have used
a less than accurate or dependable source for my info. (weather may not be the best example but you
get the idea here) If I want to eat tomato soup - which one do I buy? The one advertised as tasting the
“best” or the one that has a label that says “Non GMO” “Made with garlic and onions” This is a very
simple example of the importance of being info and media literate. When I have the information I need
and am clear about why I need this info, the next step is to be sure you have all the info you need and
have evaluated it. If you don’t like garlic and onions in your tomato soup it is key to read this info on the
label or you will be disappointed with the taste of the soup. If you listen to the ad that says “our soup
tastes” best you might not agree. Being info and media literate can become very personalized.

In my mind “media” has two meanings. One being the actual “medium”, one uses to find info, For
example, if I want info about a certain type of flower, I may use books, textual sources from internet,
professional texts, videos factual data, images of the flower, a trip to the local flower store or gardens to
view the flower and touch, smell and see it. So it is important to be able to use all types of media or
mediums to get what we want - be it a product, or a means to an end.

Always include the human senses, feeling and opinions and -our own experiences and intelligence as an
additional source of information. As we plow through and use all the information at our fingertips these
day, being “information and media literate” is important for daily success and it is important to include
“what we already know” and every source available otherwise we will not succeed. Without the best
info and knowing how to use it, our efforts will be useless. This is another reason info and media literacy
is important.

So the term “multi-media” becomes key. One must be literate in various forms of media. So the medium
is important and presently it is very important to be able to successfully utilize all types of mediums to
acquire information. In our current employment market - these skills are key. Without this type of
literacy, it is difficult to successfully maneuver through employment or daily life.

The second definition, for me, is the media we are all presented with everyday via the communication
processes - tv, radio, print, art, ets. I think it is important to be information and media literate to be able
to evaluate what everyone is placing in the mainstream as “information” and critically thinking about
how true and valid it is. We are presented with so much information these days that literacy includes
knowing how to say to yourself - I need this info now, or I don’t need this info now - Does it match my
purpose or what I am trying to accomplish. And at the same time being able to know what might be true
info, accurate info, propaganda, fake news, info presented with a bias or slant is a huge element of the
importance of being information and media literate.

These reasons and skills - and I’m sure others could add to my list - are why I think it is important to be
information and media literate.

You need to be information literate to act in the world according to the best knowledge available.
If you're not information literate (and media literacy is just a subset of information literacy), you are a
gullible person.

Gullible people will make lots of bad choices with their life, with their money and with their vote, which
often means making bad choices with everyone else's money.

People who are alphabetically illiterate depend on others to know which bus to take, for example. If they
are misled, they spend money they don't have to get nowhere. People who are innumerate, or
mathematically illiterate, will often lose money because they can't calculate the change or anticipate the
effects of interest rates.

Same thing happens with information literacy. If you can't evaluate information by yourself, you will
depend on others to decide for you. They will likely decide on what's best for them, as much as you trust
them - be they your parents, your friends, your bank manager, your minister, your radio host or your
political leader.

It's always better to think for yourself, even if it is to know why you trust who you trust to decide on your
behalf.

MEDIA: You must be able to read a variety of mediums for several purposes - the most obvious being to
be informed. Therefore, you gather your contemporary world news from newspapers (either on sale at
the newsagent or on-line), you read a little bit of trivial gossip in a popular magazine to find out if Johnny
Depp is bringing his dogs to Australia again :), or some such thing; and you watch the news on TV to find
out if anything significant (such as World War 3) is looming. It is through the media that you become
informed about world leaders, world politics, federal leaders and federal politics, local leaders and local
politics.

Some of what you are reading, viewing, and watching, is true. Some is not. The royal family in Britain are
noted for being able to misrepresent the true state of affairs to the media. I’m sure that many politicians
have the same gift. I think that I have read that Brangelina are heading for a divorce about three times in
the last fortnight. Is it true? Who knows? More importantly, why is it newsworthy because who cares?

The media is also important for keeping you up to date with local current events such as the ballet (Li
Cunxin, author of Mao’s Last Dancer is the Director of Queensland Ballet - did you know? - so naturally
we all want to go to the ballet if he is the choreographer); organised picnics in the park; and where new
refrigerators are on sale.

When reading, watching, or listening to the media, you must be a critical reader. For example, the fact
that Japan is whale hunting in Australian waters may or may not be of interest to you. Are you critical or
supportive of the fact that Greenpeace is trying to stop that? The fact that Kim (the leader of North
Korea) is only 32 years old may or may not be of interest to you. Are you critical of that? Do you think
that North Korea should have an older leader, a more democratic leader, or don’t you care? These are
the questions you must ask yourself as you read your newspaper, watch the news, and listen to news
flashes on the radio as you drive to work.

Without the media, not only would you miss out on wonderful entertainment such as listening to the
Beatles and the Bee Gees, but you might also miss the newsflash that there is tsunami off-shore.

The media is important.

IT (INFORMATION): You need to be information or IT literate (I’m assuming that you’re talking about
being able to use a variety of devices and apps), because this is the medium of the future.

I am a school teacher and a writer. It would be impossible for me to get through the amount of work that
I have to do if I wrote everything by hand as my foremothers did. As well as writing documents on word,
I can put lessons on EdStudio, and read students’ results on a spreadsheet. I can research using a search
engine such as Google, and I can use a university library by clicking on icons. These may appear to be
easily mastered accomplishments, but my mother would not have been able to do any of the above. My
daughter (if I had one) would be able to do far more.

People can already upload books on kindle and thus do not buy a hard copy of a book unless they
particularly enjoy it or want to give it as a gift. There have been predictions that students of the future
will be taught by robotic computers of some sort, and that human teachers will be obsolete.

It is essential that everybody who plans to move forward must have IT (information) skills.

In short - these are the ways that we receive, process, and send information in contemporary society.

can research using a search engine such as Google, and I can use a university library by clicking
on icons. These may appear to be easily mastered accomplishments, but my mother would not
have been able to do any of the above. My daughter (if I had one) would be able to do far more.

People can already upload books on kindle and thus do not buy a hard copy of a book unless they
particularly enjoy it or want to give it as a gift. There have been predictions that students of the
future will be taught by robotic computers of some sort, and that human teachers will be
obsolete.

It is essential that everybody who plans to move forward must have IT (information) skills.

In short - these are the ways that we receive, process, and send information in contemporary
society.

You must understand when you are being presented information honestly, with truth and when
you are being fooled.

Sadly, too much information today is false, fake, twisted, or all of these.

The sheer number of memes spreading fake information, often shared by people who should
have enough smarts to not be so gullible, scares me.

Know how to see through the manipulated picture, the perverse twisting of information, and see
truth.

You will be a better person for it, even if your friends think you’re an idiot, you’ll know better.

Technology is improving fast, it is efficient, in real time and it is cheaper than conventional form
of communications (live or recorded). Books are becoming digital, job applications, government
forms, taxes, corporate policies, school records, assignments and homework are done online. It is
easier to correct, update and distribute information this way so it will be the norm. If you are not
digitally literate, it will be a handicap and life will become increasingly difficult. You will be
dependent on others for basic needs.

Because the media doesn't always deal with facts or give us accurate information — especially
social media. If we don't know how to figure out what info is true and what is not then we risk
turning our voices over to the most charismatic dumbass that sounds good. I think the lack of
media and information literacy is a big part of causing our governments to provide us with the
kind of candidates we have running in elections today. Come election time it seems as though
many places are in a situation where the voters are faced with a choice between people that don't
represent anybody but themselves. This needs to stop — we can make it stop, just by thinking
critically, and understanding the information we are given.

I taught MultimediArt at the university level. I believe, and taught, that the ability to use the new
tools available for the dissemination of information would, in the future, be at least as important

controlling the information which the populace receives has always been necessary in order to
maintain power.

This GI es you a humble time in your dealings and enables you not to spent unneccessarily on
things that you can just do. This makes to be in position to define what you can do and want to
do.

Think of for example how tiresome to ask somebody on how yo send an email to somebody.
That is just asking somebody on how to release yourself. Or how do I breath, which is just
natural.

So, it is too important to have some know how.
