BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT ETIS 

ETIS is also called as European Tourism Indicator system  The European commission launched
European Indicator System in February 2013 with the aim helping destinations to monitor and
measure the sustainable tourism Performance. 
It is a system of indicators suitable for all tourist destinations, encouraging them to adopt a more
intelligent approach to tourism planning.

HOW IS THE TOOL CREATED?


The European Tourism Indicator system was designed by the University of Surrey through the
development of the Tourism Sustainability group indicators. 
It aims to act on sustainability principles such as policies, plans, and strategies. 
The European Commission has focused on sustainability plan since they are the number one
tourist destination in the world making ETIS as their basis of all their sustainability plan and
implemented until now

The European Tourism Indicator System is being used worldwide as basis of their sustainable
planning. MALTA is now using the ETIS as the basis of their tourism sustainability plan. 
They entitled their sustainability plan as “Limits to Growth” according to world commission
education in 2018 
The ETIS was introduced by a female researchers Rita Cannas and Nadia Theuma. 
Research Title: Strategies and Tools for sustainable tourism destination management: Applying
the European Tourism Indicator system in Malta.

WHY IS THE TOOL SUSTAINABLE? 


Destinations that use ETIS can improve their economic sustainability while helping to preserve
the diverse natural landscapes that the European continent has to offer and enabling access for
everyone.
