Dr. John P. Williams
Psychology Professor at Chapman University
One University Drive, Orange, CA, 92866

To the Review Committee,
I am writing to you on behalf of Michael Drexler, one of
the brightest and most promising pupils I’ve come across
in my 27 years as a psychology professor here at Cha-
pman University. Claremont Graduate University would
certainly profit from Michael’s acceptance into their Mas-
ter of Psychology program.
It’s hard for someone to stand out in a lecture hall fil-
led with 100-300 students, but it didn’t take long for me to
notice Michael. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching him in a
number of psychology courses over the past 4 years and
have worked with him on a smaller scale in my Advanced
Behavior Therapy and Abnormal Psychology workshops.
His participation is always welcome as he asks questions
that are well thought out, proving he has a high level of
comprehension but that he wants to delve even deeper
into the more complex theories. I am reminded of myself
during my time at the University of Frankfurt when I see
Michael’s indisputable passion for psychology and all
things related to the study of the human mind. He admit-
ted to reading most of my research journal articles in his
spare time and even my book on Cognitive Behavior Prac-
tice. We’ve discussed these readings, amongst others, at
great length after class.

Michael is capable of understanding complex and

advanced psychological concepts, and continues to push
himself to improve. He is a sociable and gregarious indi-
vidual who makes everyone around him feel welcome and
important.  Apart from his obvious enthusiasm for psy-
chology, he manages to outshine his peers in other areas
of his schooling as well. I’ve spoken to other professors on
the subject of Michael’s remarkable writing skills and abi-
lity to articulate at a higher level than most college stu-
dents.
My courses are designed to encourage students to
push their academic limits and exercise critical thinking.
Michael accepts every challenge thrown at him and lo-
ves pushing his mind to the next level of understanding.
The best example is perhaps his most recent paper which
displayed not only his admiration for psychology but an
undeniable comprehension of the history of cognitive psy-
chology and its impact on modern psychology. Michael
wrote a perfectly structured, well thought out review of
the relationship  between behavioral and cognitive psy-
chology. His writing is eloquent and captivating, using
clear bias-free language that is presented in great detail
without being overburdening. It’s obvious that he spends
countless hours researching and is able to produce this
evidence in a clear and concise manner. In my mind it’s
very apparent that this young man will go on to write
journals and books that will nurture the advancement of
modern psychology.
It brings me joy to think that I have had the opportu-
nity to help Michael on his path to a career in psychology
and I look forward to following his progress in the years
to come. I am aware of CGU’s long and distinguished his-
tory with Applied Cognitive Psychology, and it is without
hesitation that I recommend Michael into this program.

To whom it may concern,
Antonio has been a full-time intern here at W&DA, Inc.
for almost two years and has become a major asset to our
team. When approached to write a recommendation let-
ter to strengthen his application for the Master of Archi-
tecture program at Roger Williams University, I accepted
without hesitation. As his mentor, Antonio has my full su-
pport in his postgraduate endeavors. He has the power to
inspire those around him and his positive outlook on life
should be a lesson to us all.
Antonio applied for the architectural intern position
in 2015, along with several other graduates. It was quite
apparent that he was the perfect candidate. He was the
top student in all his classes and his portfolio included
many impressive projects and innovative designs. Over
the course of my time at W&D, there has been a revolving
door of interns. But it is without reservation when I say
that Antonio has been one of the most outstanding interns
we’ve ever had. Starting an internship can be an intimi-
dating experience, but Antonio completed this transition
with ease. He brings a certain tenacity to the company
that seems to light a spark under all of us. His ideas are
always well thought out, and he is able to communicate

6

with all the team members flawlessly. He has a knack for

design and has an uncommonly creative mind. Working
alongside Antonio has been a pleasure and anyone lucky
enough to work with him will share the same feeling.
Antonio has an incredible understanding of construc-
tion means, methods, and techniques. Our clients are in
disbelief when they find out that he is only 1 year out of
college. The way he explains his ideas and the manner in
which he goes about his work is similar to that of an archi-
tect with a decade of experience. He still has a lot to learn,
as architecture is a field that is constantly changing while
technology advances and new design techniques unfold,
but he is an incredibly fast learner, always eager to ex-
pand his horizons. Architecture is all about visualization
and one of Antonio’s most redeeming qualities is his abili-
ty to see the projects beyond the drawing board.
One of our current civic projects, in the conceptual
design phase, has shown us that Antonio can handle any
type of architectural project. A 120-acre mixed-use deve-
lopment area requires complex planning as the various
land uses include single family housing, multi-family hou-
sing, commercial, civic, parks, and open space. Antonio is
capable of understanding the clients’ needs and conver-
ting those ideas to paper. He is able to visualize the pa-
rameters of an area and maximize housing units without
reducing the parks or open space. It’s inevitable that en-
gineering problems occur during a project of this stature,
but a good architect like Antonio will be able to assess the
issue and come up with potential solutions on the spot wi-
thout being overwhelmed. Antonio has been instrumental
in the design and conceptualization of this project.
Antonio continues to impress me with his performan-
ce and seemingly endless enthusiasm. He has incredible

creative thinking skills, able to analyze and critically as-

sess problems to find the most effective solution. His de-
signs and ideas are extremely creative and he manages
to see the big picture without missing the smallest details.
I highly recommend that you consider Antonio into your
Master of Architecture program. I believe that he will
go on to accomplish great architectural feats and I hope
that Roger Williams University will provide him with the
chance to do so.
Kind regards,

To the Admissions Committee:

It is with great pleasure that I write to you in regards
to Carl Watson’s acceptance into the Computer Enginee-
ring program at MIT. I have been overseeing Carl’s work
here at TechCorp for almost 3 years and I’ve seen firsthand
his contribution to our company. I highly recommend
you consider Carl for your program as he very capable
computer technician and is always eager to increase his
knowledge of the technology industry.
I hired Carl as an intern shortly after his graduation
from college and it quickly became evident he was a per-
fect fit for our company. While Carl is perfectly capable of
working independently, his interpersonal skills are exem-
plary and allow him to thrive in a group atmosphere or
when speaking publicly.
He has completed multiple projects over the course
of his time at TechCorp and in a very timely manner. His
coding abilities are some of the best I’ve ever seen. In this
line of work there are always a million little problems and
bugs that must be fixed, Carl has never-ending patience
and determination when it comes to these inevitable sna-
gs. He is extremely capable of maintaining focus for long
periods of time and his performance never falters, even

9

after working on one task for an extended period of time.

The main reason why I think any graduate school
would be ecstatic to have Carl join their program is his
desire to be a part of the advancement of technology and
computer software. Usually I assign projects to interns,
but Carl has proven to be a very capable and trustworthy
employee and when he approached me with his own idea
for a project, I was quick to say yes. He’s working with a
small team of new interns to create a face-detecting sys-
tem that could be used for providing access to facilities,
much like fingerprint ID. The amount of work that gets
done increases when Carl is in the picture, he’s a very fo-
cused individual and that quality tends to rub off on his
colleagues. He is enthusiastic, energetic, and has a very
positive attitude that contributes to the workplace and
will no doubt have the same effect on any classroom set-
ting.
Carl is a very mature, well-rounded individual and
has become a great asset to this company. We will be sor-
ry to see him leave, but we’re glad he’s willing to take the
time to extend his education. If he is accepted into this pro-
gram, Carl will quickly prove himself as a brilliant young
man who will no doubt go on to make significant contribu-
tions to his chosen field. Feel free to contact me anytime to
further discuss Carl’s qualifications.

Dear Mr. Lee,

I highly recommend Emily Smith as a candidate for
graduate school. I have worked with Emily in my capacity
as Education Department Chair at Salitus College.
While a student at Salitus, Emily maintained a 3.98
GPA while taking a full load of honors classes and semi-
nars. She excelled as the top student within the senior-le-
vel Teaching Methods course I teach; her other instruc-
tors in our department speak highly of her performance
in their classes, as well.
In additional to her classwork, Emily was also em-
ployed in various positions including teaching a museum
program to fourth-grade classes in the Saratoga Springs
School District, teaching both adults and children to ride
horses, and managing horse show participation for a lo-
cal riding stable.
She accomplished all these tasks with great initiati-
ve and with a very positive attitude. Emily has a wonder-

ful rapport with people of all ages, especially the “at-risk”

children she worked with at Carroll Hill School and Pros-
pect Child and Family Center. Emily has a special talent
working with the children who need more guidance and
support than those typically found in a traditional class-
room setting.
Her ability to connect with her students and her talent
at teaching simple concepts, as well as more advanced
topics, are both truly superior. She has excellent written
and verbal communication skills, is extremely organized,
reliable, and computer literate.
Emily would be a tremendous asset to your program
and I recommend her to you without reservation. If you
have any further questions with regard to her backgrou-
nd or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern:

It is my honor to recommend John Doe for matricula-
tion into the Graduate program at Rochester Institute. I
have had the pleasure to know and work with John for the
last six years. He first worked with me as an undergrad-
uate intern in the software development organization at
XYZ in Syracuse, NY.
Following his internship with me and his graduation
from Rochester Institute, I was fortunate enough to keep
track of John’s career so that, when the opportunity arose,
I was able to recruit him to his current position here at
ABCD. The same characteristics that convinced me to hire
him away from his previous employer, B Company, are
also why I am happy to provide him with an unqualified
endorsement for graduate study.
John brings to all of his activities energy, enthusi-
asm, and commitment. This is to be expected in any suc-

cessful member of an entrepreneurial organization, and

in this regard, John fits in well. Be it in the parsing of in-
tricate algorithms in a billing system, the crafting of an
object hierarchy, or the establishment of best practices
with an emerging technology, John consistently delivers
high-quality software for our organization. This speaks
to his overall intellect and ability to learn, attributes that
will serve him well in his graduate study.
While John is a relatively junior member of our or-
ganization as measured by tenure, he quickly established
himself as a go-to person in the product domains in which
he has worked. He has been ever-willing to work with
members of our organization to share his knowledge and
expertise, most notably as a presenter for presentations
on product functions. He has a deep-rooted spirit of help-
fulness that, coupled with his quick grasp of subject mat-
ter, speaks well to his potential as a teaching assistant or
instructor.
What I find most engaging in John’s character are
his wide-ranging interests outside of software. Two of his
abiding interests are game theory and economics. He can
be quickly engaged in an in-depth discussion, for instance,
of the rationale behind EZ-Pass, the lack of rationality of
the financial markets, or the optimal approach for mak-
ing a few quid on the super-bowl. John’s broad range of in-
terests speaks well to his potential as a researcher, both in
bringing a wide range of theory to the research at hand,
as well as carrying forward new hypotheses of interest to
researchers.
John Doe is a valued member of our organization
whom we have learned we can rely on, regardless of the
difficulty of the task to hand or the novelty of the chal-
lenge. His combination of intelligence, commitment, per-

severance, creativity, and a compassionate character will

certainly make him a valuable member of any academic

plication.

To the Review Committee:
I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for
Janet Lerner, an honors undergraduate student in our
program. I have known Janet for more than two years. I
came to know her very well when she was a student in my
economic geography course. This summer, I hired her to
work on an NSF-sponsored research project on Human
Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. And for the
past six months, we have been developing a laboratory
manual for my undergraduate course on the global eco-
nomy. It is on the basis of this extensive experience that I
write a letter of unequivocal support.
Janet is an undergraduate student in the honors pro-
gram at Mythic University. The honors program is desig-
ned to provide the educational experience of a small Ivy
League college within a large public university. To be ac-
cepted, a student must have high SAT scores, be an exce-
llent writer, and have very good high school grades. Stu-
dents fulfill their course requirements by taking honors
courses or by selecting a combination of classes with a
heavy emphasis on graduate seminars and independent
reading courses. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.2
or better in all courses in order to remain in the honors
program. Janet has fulfilled this requirement admirably,
maintaining a GPA of 3.8 or better throughout her career.
Over the last few years, Janet designed a difficult curricu-
lum for herself and has been very successful in combining
graduate seminars and advanced undergraduate reading
courses to fulfill her degree requirements. She is comforta-
ble with herself and is well-recognized by her peer group.

16

@phdnoseua

She, along with her peers from the honors program, will
enter the nation’s best graduate schools next year in such
varied fields as medicine, law, and other allied social
sciences. She seeks to enroll in your graduate planning
program.
Janet is an enthusiastic, energetic, and exceptionally
well-organized student. She writes beautifully, is widely
read, and demonstrates good quantitative skills. In my
economic geography course, she was the best student in
the class. Her performance exceeded that of the incoming
graduate students, including an NSF fellowship recipient.
She always came to class prepared and was clearly far
above her peers in understanding and appreciating the
course material.
I have been especially impressed by Janet’s determi-
nation and sparkle. Her work on the Model United Nations
program (MUN) is an extremely large responsibility. The
Model United Nations program convenes approximately
1000 high school students from around the world to simu-
late the experience of the UN. Janet has responsibility for
designing and executing all phases of the simulation.
She reviews the agendas of the UN over the previous
year, and then collaboratively develops the student-run
assembly agenda. To undertake this task successfully,
she must understand international relations, internatio-
nal political economy, and world economic development
issues. Her UN work has clearly influenced her interests
and has been a very broadening experience for her. I am
sure one explanation for why she has done so well in cou-
rses with me is that she understands the geography of the
global economy from the simulated, yet very real-world
perspective of the Model United Nations program.

Concerning her potential as a teaching assistant,

Janet has detailed experience in developing educational
materials for courses. After many years of dissatisfaction
with economic geography texts, I decided I would develop
a laboratory manual for my introductory course. Based
on Janet’s superior performance in the course I employed
her to put the manual together. Although we talked at len-
gth about the project and I gave her broad outlines for
each segment, nonetheless the lab manual is very much
her creation. It is a five-assignment workbook built arou-
nd a hypothetical scenario in which the student is a staff
advisor to a program officer of the Ford Foundation. The
assignments require that students complete a thorough
analysis of a country, including an economic history, de-
mographic analysis, trade assessment, and policy propo-
sal. The manual is designed such that a student will be able
to retrieve the necessary quantitative and cartographic
information to complete the projects. Each assignment re-
sults in a memo based on a template Janet developed. Ja-
net identified and tested all sources listed in the manual,
and this project would not have reached fruition without
Janet’s tireless efforts.
I know from discussions with colleagues and gradua-
te students in my department that we all think Janet is a
very special student. I have enjoyed getting to know her as
a person and find her surprisingly mature for her young
age, quite capable of working entirely on her own in a sel-
f-directed manner. I am pleased that Janet is planning to
enroll in graduate school starting this fall. I have no dou-
bt that she has the skills, focus, and determination to suc-
cessfully complete a master’s degree in a timely fashion. I
also believe she will seek to complete a Ph.D.
Janet is a rare find. She is well-trained, ambitious,
and yet very open-minded and even self-effacing. I belie-

Letter of recommendation for Janet Lerner’s gradua-
te application
November 29, 2021
Janet Lerner is the best student I have this year, and
I enthusiastically support her graduate application. She
is highly intelligent, works well as a team member, and
has demonstrated leadership potential. I enthusiastically
supported her application for the student position on the
Mythic University Board of Trustees for the same reasons.
She was the runner-up for that distinguished post, and
Mythic University lost out on a true leader. But I believe
her time is yet to come.
Janet has taken only one class with me, but we have
maintained contact through discussions in my office and
on the squash court. She is an excellent student—she re-
ceived an A in my class and was among the top two or three
students in all facets of the course. She writes well, she is
very analytical, she is articulate, and she is prepared. But
the A hardly did justice to her performance in my class.
A major component of this class was a local government
simulation. Students played a variety of roles and dealt
with issues given to them in the simulation textbook and
by me, as simulation leader. We spent over three weeks of
class time on this activity, and it allowed me to evaluate
my students’ strengths and weaknesses in some depth. Ja-
net did not simply succeed in this simulation; rather, she
owned it. The simulation included a zoning/development
problem that is intended to be virtually intractable given
the assigned roles and other simulation constraints. Janet
beat the simulation. Her proposals were innovative, but
within the confines of the simulation rules. She developed

20
Licenciado para - Eliude de Sousa Rocha - 66706017272 - Protegido por Eduzz.com
@phdnoseua

a solution, built the necessary coalition, developed crea-

tive compromises, and worked through to the proposal’s
enactment.
For her ingenuity, creativity, adherence to role, and
enthusiasm, she received the class award for the most
valuable simulation participant. But from my perspective
her contribution went beyond this performance. Throu-
gh the simulation Janet helped to set a tone, to take the si-
mulation seriously and never say “it’s not real” as would
many of the other students. She showed leadership within
the simulation and within the class.
Reflective now about Janet’s contribution to the class,
I would add one more point about the simulation. Janet
was also the most severe critic of its design and my opera-
tional decisions. She challenged me to keep the simulation
realistic and to avoid contradictions and implausible de-
velopments. Janet is critical, perceptive, aggressive, but
not overpowering. Her criticisms were honest and appro-
priate.
Needless to say, I would love to teach a whole class
full of Janet Lerners. She will make an outstanding gra-
duate student. She has the intellectual capacity and she
has the ambition. Based on what I have seen of her in the
classroom and on the squash court, she also has the dri-
ve. And she will bring to graduate school a breadth rarely
seen among graduate students: She double-majored in Po-
litical Science and Art History, a combination you do not
often see. She speaks easily, and unusually perceptively,
about politics, sports, the university community and aca-
demia in general, and anything else that comes up.
She will be a rare catch for any graduate school, and
I will watch her career develop with great interest and

To the UCD School of Film Application Committee:
Letter of Support for John Lerner’s UCD Graduate
Scholarship
OCTOBER 20, 2021
Perhaps the most memorable discussion I’ve ever had
with a student about his decision to switch majors was
three years ago. The student was a first-year Polymer
Science and Engineering major on a scholarship, taking
my introductory film class as an elective, and he told me
he was considering a switch to Film. Assuming that this
student was simply running into typical academic pro-
blems in first-year chemistry and physics courses, I asked
how those courses were going. “Oh, I’m getting As in tho-
se,” he assured me with a calm wave of his hand. “But I
long to study Film.” That student was John Lerner.
Since that time, I’ve worked with John as a mentor
on several of his papers for classes ranging from honors
composition to film history and theory. In my seven-year
career as a film instructor, no student has been more deli-
ghtful to work with than has John. His papers are always
creative, self-styled, skillful, and analytical. I quote from
a creative essay he wrote during his first year of study,
spoofing college philosophy and psychology classes by
claiming that he got through them simply by peppering in
quotations from Ingmar Bergman films: “When my philo-
sophy professor asked me to explain human reactions to
fear, I snapped, ‘In our fear, we make an image, and that
image we call God.’ I got an A in the course.” Later, John
as a character in the essay discovers that he can arbitra-
rily quote Bergman films to advance his personal rela-
tionships as a college student as well, in that college is “a

23

@phdnoseua

world full of fake intellectuals.”

This is not to say that John’s work is too quirky or sar-
donic to thrive in the traditional academic arena. Another
paper he wrote for a film class on Francois Truffaut’s La
Nuit Américaine clearly demonstrates his facility with
formal analysis. In this paper, John compares Truffaut’s
life to his art (a staple of film criticism, certainly), but he
does not trot out sophomoric insights—rather he analy-
zes crisply and complexly, embracing principles of para-
dox, juxtaposition, technique. One sees John’s gift for lan-
guage and analytical focus from the first line of the paper:
“The tap of his cane is heard before the first appearance of
the boy on screen—almost an apparition of Antione Doi-
nel—hustling down the sidewalk toward an imposing set
of vertical bars.” In this paper and others I’ve reviewed
with John, it’s clear that he has mastered the art of stu-
dent paper writing, and he is just as comfortable with a
formal analysis of film noir as he is with dropping in cul-
tural references to vernacular English or Groucho Marx.
I turn to these examples of John’s work so prominently
not because I lack other kinds of evidence, but because as
I read his work I am so impressed with the richness and
diversity of his talents. More personally, I have had nu-
merous opportunities to match my opinion of John’s work
with that of his character. I’ve been intrigued and moved
by conversations with him about his three adopted siblin-
gs. I’ve spoken with his peers about the particular sensi-
bility that he brings to discussions in his classes, and I’ve
spoken with his other professors about him, one of whom
reports that he consistently “raises the tenor of class dis-
cussion greatly.” As a lover of film and a screenplay au-
thor, I have enjoyed many relaxed conversations with
John about both film and script writing. As his writing

te retooling of a script that is off the mark, or that I need

only briefly characterize a trend in his work for his jaunty
mind to apply it to self-improvement.
In short, John is both scholarly and culturally entren-
ched, ambitious but not pretentious, self- deprecating yet
confident, forthright but unassuming, delightfully irreve-
rent yet appropriately respectful— a complex and whole
human being. A recent discussion with him about his GPA
crystallizes these traits: “I have a 3.99-something GPA,” he
smiled. “I got an A- in a one-credit skiing class. I’m glad,
really. Took the pressure off.”
Given the substantial two-year stipend of the UCD
Graduate Scholarship and your express request that re-
commenders voice their criticisms as well as their praise,
I offer a few comments in that regard. Clearly, I mean to
give John Lerner the highest recommendation, but not so
subjectively that my opinion of him is varnished. I have
known students with more concrete long-term goals than
John has, I have worked with better writers, and for all
his academic accomplishment, John is still a slightly wi-
thdrawn figure and at times the best in him needs to be
coaxed forth. None of these issues, though, keep me from
considering him to be among the best, most admired stu-
dents I have known in my teaching career—a student on
par with the award of a prestigious university scholar-
ship.
Because of John’s obvious writing and scholarly ta-
lent and his proven high level of interest in film, no stu-
dent I have known would be more suited to thrive at the
UCD School of Film, especially with a scholarship to fund
his first two years. Please do give him your considered at-
tention.

Carta para uma vaga de pós-doc
Letter for Suzan Heintz
Search and Screen Committee Department of Bacte-
riology University of Cambridge Boston
Dear Members of the Search Committee,
It is my pleasure to recommend Dr. Suzan Heintz for
the post-doctoral position in your laboratory. Stephen
completed her Ph.D. in my lab and is one of the most outs-
tanding researchers to emerge from my lab. I recommend
him to you highly. In my lab Dr. Heintz cloned and charac-
terized the gliD gene from Cytophaga johnsoniae. He made
the intriguing discovery that the GliD protein is required
for gliding behavior in Cy- tophaga and its human homo-
logue is associated with a highly metastatic form of breast
cancer. This observation suggests that there may be com-
mon features in bacterial gliding motility and mobility of
human tumor cells. Dr. Heintz initiated a highly produc-
tive collaboration with Professor David Whitely that led
to the crystallization and high resolution structure of the
GliD protein. Dr. Heintz brought that work to fruition in a
PNAS paper, on which she is the senior author. In addition
to the PNAS paper, Dr. Heintz published three other papers
from her thesis, which attest to her hard work, biological
insight, and outstanding writing skills. Dr. Heintz proved
himself an outstanding researcher and valued colleague.
Dr. Heintz continued to produce original research as
a postdoc in Jim Wooley’s lab working on Bacillus subti-
lis development. Once again, Dr. Heintz discovered a gene
that is found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, this
time in a search for sporulation genes in B. subtilis. She

27

@phdnoseua

identified a new sporulation gene, designated spoW, whi-

ch has a mammalian homologue that appears to be asso-
ciated with lymphocyte differentiation and maturation.
Although that work is not yet published, it has a bright
future. The project was technically challenging, but Dr.
Heintz has surmounted all of the obstacles and a genetic
and biochemical analysis of the spoW allele and its pro-
duct will be ready for publication soon. Given Dr. Heintz
`s past record in publishing research, I have no doubt that
this work will be published in a top-tier journal.
Dr. Heintz proved himself to be a capable mentor and
teacher. She has supervised three undergraduate resear-
chers. She is clearly able to transmit her passion and ta-
lent for research to young scientists. Similarly, her clas-
sroom teaching was met with rave reviews. Dr. Heintz is
one of my few colleagues to whom I will entrust my class
when I travel. Dr. Heintz was also a terrific citizen and a
leader in my lab. She handled responsibility well, was re-
sourceful, and took initiative to maintain equipment and
ensure that safety standards were met. She took on many
of the responsibilities of a faculty member and excelled in
everything she did.
In short, I give Stephen my highest recommendation.
She is one of my finest colleagues—an outstanding re-
searcher and talented teacher. She has demonstrated an
uncanny ability to unmask genes that play parallel roles
in bacteria and mammals, and I expect her to be one of
the leading researchers in her field. She would be a good
catch for any department, and I urge you to consider her
candidacy seriously.
Sincerely,
Theodore Corvallis

Dear Members of the Search Committee,
It is my pleasure to recommend Dr. Susan Heintz for the
position of Assistant Professor in your department. Susan
was my graduate student and ranks among my very best
students. I recommend her to you highly. As a student, Su-
san cloned and characterized the gliD gene from Cytopha-
ga johnsoniae. She made the intriguing discovery that the
GliD protein is required for gliding behavior in Cytophaga
and its human homologue is associated with a highly me-
tastatic form of breast cancer. This observation suggests
that there may be features in common between bacterial
gliding motility and mobility of human tumor cells. A hi-
ghly productive collaboration with Professor David Whi-
tely led to the crystallization and high resolution structu-
re of the GliD protein. That work was published in a PNAS
paper, on which Susan is a coauthor. In addition to the
PNAS paper, Susan published three other papers from her
thesis, which attest to her hard work, biological in-sight,
and outstanding writing skills. Her high productivity as a
graduate student is particularly remarkable because she
had two children while in graduate school and her hus-
band is a resident in emergency room medicine.
Susan continued her record of excellent work as a
postdoctoral student in Jim Wooley’s lab working on Ba-
cillus subtilis development. Once again, Susan discovered
a gene that is found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes,
this time in a search for sporulation genes in B. subtilis.

tion. Susan has been slow to publish this work and there-
fore has no publications from her three-year postdoctoral
study. No doubt her family responsibilities have contribu-
ted to this delay.
Susan proved herself an able mentor and a sterling
classroom teacher. She has three undergraduate resear-
chers who have all coauthored publications, which is in-
dicative of the excellent mentorship they received from
Susan. Similarly, her classroom teaching was met with
rave reviews. Of all of my students, I felt the most com-
fortable asking Susan to cover my classes for me when I
was out of town because I knew she would do a great job.
Susan was also a cooperative and reliable lab citizen. She
handled responsibility well and conscientiously followed
through on all that was asked of her to maintain equip-
ment and ensure that safety standards were met.
In short, I give Susan my highest recommendation.
She is one of the best students I have seen and is a talented
teacher and mentor. She has an uncanny ability to unmask
genes that play parallel roles in bacteria and mammals,
and I expect her to continue to be as productive and crea-
tive as she was as a student in my lab. She would be a good
catch for any department and I urge you to consider her
candidacy seriously.

Carta para uma pós-doc position
To Dr. Shuwat, head of the laboratory of Biochemis-
try and Molecular Biology,
It is pleasure to write recommendation letter for Dr.
Sam Heintze who wants to upgrade his designation. I have
known him for about five years since he joined for the gra-
duation at our department, at New York University.
His work involves understanding the role of the the
GliD protein which consists of a highly conserved hepta-
peptide repeat. He has identified the total set of proteins
that interacts with the complex of RNAP-II transcription
using proteomics and Nanо-LC/MS, MALDI TOF/TOF. He
further explored the mechanism of interaction of these
identified protein/transcription factors with respect to
RNAP-II. In his brief tenure of PhD he identified important
kinases which phosphorylates a key residue of the C-ter-
minal domain of RNA polymerase II during transcription
and have tried to explore its possible function. The finding
increases the complexity of the different stages of trans-
cription and ‘Ups the RNAP-II code’ necessary for Gene
regulation.
Dr. Sam Heintze has substantial experience in the
area of Molecular Biology, Protein biophysics, Gene regu-
lation and Transcription. He is capable of planning and
executing the experiments independently. His scientific
achievement exemplifies in the form of his publications
and prestigious national fellowship awards achieved like
CSIR-JRF,DBT-JRF,ICMR-JRF and GATE-foundation.
Regarding his personal qualities, he is extremely
well behaved and gets along well with his colleagues and

is always ready to lend a helping hand to them. Dr. Sam

Heintze was an integral member in upgrading the Lab
and the department with personal and professional beha-
viors.
I personally feel that Dr. Sam Heintze is an asset for
the organization and strongly recommend his candidatu-

To Dr. Klarck,
I am writing in support of Dr. Sam Heintz’s applica-
tion for a post-doctoral position in your lab. I have known
Dr. Heintz for the past few years as a member of his thesis
(doctoral) committee. He is a very hard working student in
Dr. Davis` lab and I have closely monitored his progress
during the doctoral committee meetings which are con-
ducted every year. Dr. Heintz has the scientific aptitude to
excel as a research scientist.
Dr. Heintz’s PhD thesis study revolves around identi-
fying the multiple cell signaling pathways that regulate
tumor formation upon the loss of Glyn-D protein. As part
of his thesis work, he has published 2 first author resear-
ch papers in “Journal of Celular Biology” and “Cancer Re-
search” and will soon communicate his third paper.
During his laboratory courses and research, he has
developed very good practical skills on various cell bio-
logy and biomechanical techniques. He has mastered
the basic techniques in molecular biology like DNA/RNA
isolation, PCR, protein expression and characterization,
bacterial and mammalian cell culture, multiple cell-ba-
sed assays and animal handling. He also has the ability to
think independently about his research and has used this
effectively to drive forward his PhD work. He is efficient
in performing all the experiments by himself and I since-
rely believe that such independent approach is an asset
which will help him tremendously in his scientific career.
Dr. Heintz is a well-organized person, and I am sure that

Izabela Fields is among the best students I have had
in five years teaching, and I enthusiastically support her
graduate application. We first met in a course that I teach
entitled Experimental analysis of behavior, but she also
has been my student in other classes, and I am her senior

team member, and has demonstrated leadership potential.
In her senior year, she excelled as the top student in
the Psychology of learning course. I knew she was also
studying the same subject in another degree she was get-
ting in Education. Therefore, I invited her to give a lecture
for my Psychology students so they would have a broader
vision of the subject. She always came to class prepared
and was far above her peers in understanding and appre-
ciating the course material.
Over the last few years, Izabela designed a difficult

curriculum for herself and has been very successful in

combining seminars, internships and advanced under-
graduate courses to fulfill her degree requirements. Con-
cerning her research skills, she is a methodical, yet creati-
ve, analytical, and exceptionally well-organized student.
Her scientific writing is advanced for her level. She knows
how to read scientific literature and demonstrates good
quantitative skills.
I know from discussions with colleagues and under-
graduate students in my department that we all think
Izabela is a very committed student. I have enjoyed get-
ting to know her as a person and find her surprisingly ma-

Izabela is planning to enroll in graduate school, I have no
doubt that she has the skills, focus, and determination to
successfully complete a PhD’s degree in a timely fashion.

To the Review Committee:

I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for
Izabela Field, an undergraduate student in our Psycholo-
gy program. I have known Izabela for almost five years.
We had the opportunity to know more each other when
she became a student in my History of Psychologies cour-
se in her first year of college. Throughout the years I thou-
ght some other courses and also had Izabela as a student.
She also worked in the Communitarian Psychology clinic
we have in the Psychology program in which I was one of
her two advisors.
While a student at Brasilia University Center, Izabe-
la maintained a 3.2 GPA. She earned that while getting
a second degree in Education. While she was pursuing
two degrees, Izabela was also employed in various inter-
nships positions to increase her practical experience. She

42
Licenciado para - Eliude de Sousa Rocha - 66706017272 - Protegido por Eduzz.com
@phdnoseua

learned how to make psychological reports of patients,

applied some workshops for patients with mental illness
and also spoke about family and violence with children
and adolescents. She accomplished all these tasks with
great initiative and with a very positive attitude.
Izabela has a wonderful empathy with people of all
ages, especially the “at-risk” children she worked with at
the Balazzoli Refugee Center. In addition, she has a good
understanding about research. Most of the students do
not visualize the dimension that a research project can
take, and how much work is necessary to produce a set of
data. Izabela is very aware of research works, and with
her historic, I believe she could take the workload of gra-
duate school. I myself have experience with the workload
of classes and obligations in Spain and in the USA, and I
still believe Izabela actual routine of classes and projects
is even harder than what I have seen.
She also has a high level of energy, and a great abi-
lity to handle conflict. She worked for almost two years
in the Communitarian Psychologic clinic serving patien-
ts, applying psychological tests and issuing reports with
supervision. As one of her advisors, I can say that all of
her reports were extremely well done and organized. She
always went beyond and made sure to include a scientific
background in all of them.
Izabela would be a tremendous asset to your program,
and I recommend her to you without reservation. If you
have any further questions with regard to her backgrou-
nd or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Dr. Amanda Cristina

Dear Committee selection:
I consier it a great pleasure and an unshrinkable res-
ponsibility to recommend to you Gael Silva as a worthy
candidate for the PhD program in Political Sciences. I am
an Assistant Professor, Coordinator of the Empirical Eco-
nomy Research Group, and Executive Coordinator of the
Laboratory of Evaluation and Innovation in Public Poli-
cies at the Federal University of Parana. I came to know
Mr. Gael Silva when he started his master’s degree in 2019
and showed a high interest for academic research.
Mr. Silva is a conscientious and hardworking student
who has enjoyed a great popularity and reputation in our
Department. With a keen craving for new knowledge, he
was the most attentive in my Methodology of Scientific Re-
search course and always probed into questions together
with me. Mr. Silva compiled an outstanding grade of As in
my courses, which could be reached only by a few studen-
ts.
In addition, he was also one of the founders and a key
member of the Experiential Economy Research Group
where he conducted research apart from his thesis re-
search. He published the first results in a paper entitled
“Perilous Investigation of Law Project n. 4.083/2019” in
the Experiential Economy Bulletin. He also engaged by his
own on researching about tax risk and school dropout out.
This research along with my later contributions results in
the papers entitled “Tax Threats” and “Social Enterprises
to Decrease School Failure for 15- to 29-Year-Olds in Times
of Pandemic” that were also published in the Bulletin. Mr.
Silva’s three publications were a very outstanding result

45
Licenciado para - Eliude de Sousa Rocha - 66706017272 - Protegido por Eduzz.com

in our Department since most students do not publish that

amount during masters. Therefore, I want to emphasize
this aspect of Mr. Silva `s experiences because it really
impressed me that he managed to excel as a student and
as a researcher even though he was still carrying a full-ti-
me job.
The rapid development at the globe will necessarily
bring about tremendous and profound changes in the so-
ciety and politics. However, the development of Political
Sciences in Brazil is at a much lower speed and still lag-
ging far behind that of the United States, especially in the
newly developing fields like comparative policies and in-
ternational relations. Under such circumstances, it is ne-
cessary that students like Mr. Silva who is full of fortitude
and drive go abroad to pursue further studies. This move
not only aims at self-improvement, but also is the urgent
need of Brazil’s development. His academic preparation,
language proficiency, his persevering spirit, fine sense of
teamwork will ensure his remarkable success in his futu-
re studies and research works at your esteemed univer-
sity. I have full confidence in his, thus I recommend him
enthusiastically for the PhD program at your department.

Dear Department of Political Sciences Admissions
Committee:
I write this letter to offer my strongest support for
Gael Silva, an applicant to the PhD program at your de-
partment. I take this letter and recommendation with spe-
cial care, as my entire professional life has been spent in
Higher Education. I have completed my Ph.D. in the Uni-
versity of Salento in Italy, and I have been teaching at Fe-
deral University of Parana (FUP) since 2000. Currently, I
moved to Portugal where I am an invited assistant profes-
sor at the College of Law of the University of Lisboa, and
I keep my status of Professor at FUP teaching remotely. I
know Gael for almost 6 years as he has been my student
in the “History of Law and Legal Thought” course. I was
also the Head of the Department at FUP when Gael was a
student, so we maintained a close contact.
Gael falls into one of the top 10 students I have met. His
outstanding grasp of logic, maturity, clarity, and commu-
nication skills have made him a standout. In my History of
Law and Legal Thought course, students participated in
debate and presentations. Gael excelled in these matters

48
Licenciado para - Eliude de Sousa Rocha - 66706017272 - Protegido por Eduzz.com
@phdnoseua

and was one of the students with 100% attendance. Wi-

thout being disruptive, he was a ready and regular par-
ticipant in class discussions and always added value to
such discussion—a rare occurrence indeed. His writing
skills are similarly strong as he demonstrated in his final
undergraduate project about affirmative actions.
Gael also participated in two extracurricular courses
that I thought: “Introduction to Roman Law and Notions
of Latin Applied to Law” and “Introduction to the Art of
Oratory”. Even though the courses were not graded, Gael
was always focused and prepared for classrooms discus-
sions and debates. He was also seeking regular feedbacks
on his essays, presentations and papers, and he handled
the critiques with respect and professionalism.
Law School is extremely demanding, and I am not
known as an easy grader. Gael was awarded A’s in my
class. Law School also has a reputation for forcing stu-
dents to use logic, the same logic which I have noted to be
a characteristic trait of my students who have gone on to
be great lawyers. I am also familiar with Gael’s reputation
in our Department where he is held in high regard.
To conclude, over the years I have written many law
school recommendations for my students. I cannot think
of another reference I have written, however, where I feel
as strongly about a student’s potential to excel in gradua-
te school. It is for these reasons that I provide Gael with
my most outstanding recommendation. Gael will make a
great addition to your program.
Sincerely,
Dr. Silvano Alexandre de Oliveira Guimarães

and consequently to the hospital. I highly recommend you
consider Nicole for your program as she very capable bio-
chemistry pharmacist and is always eager to increase her
knowledge of biotechnology.
Sarah Kubitschek is one the biggest rehabilitation
centers in Latin America which provides treatment por
people injured in accidents and children born with disabi-
lities or genetical and neurological issues. It is internatio-
nally renowned as an institution for science and research,
the SARAH Network hosts the International Brain Injury
Association’s, the International Neuropsychological So-
ciety’s 24th Annual Mid-year Conference, 1st Internatio-
nal Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Congress, among

others, and developed methodologies that spread interna-

tionally. It is important to highlight the importance of the
hospital to research and to society to give a better idea of
the importance of Nicole`s work and dedication.
To get a position at Sarah Kubitschek is a very compe-
titive application process, and I was impressed that Nicole
was approved right after graduate in Pharmacy. Her res-
ponsibilities at the lab included complicated analysis such
as PCR, qPCR, electrophoresis, liquor and synovial liquid
analysis, blood bank work and bacteria and fungus trial.
It also included management skills, ability to take fast and
accurate decisions in emergency situations, willingness
to accept responsibility, and, team work, among others.
Nicole is perfectly capable of working independently, but
she also has exemplary interpersonal skills that allow her
to thrive in a group atmosphere. She has completed mul-
tiple projects over the course of her time at Sarah Kubits-
chek and in a very timely manner.
Her laboratory abilities are some of the best I’ve ever
seen. In this line of work there are always a million litt-
le problems and errors that must be fixed, Nicole has ne-
ver-ending patience and determination when it comes to
these inevitable snags. She is extremely capable of main-
taining focus for long periods of time and her performan-
ce never falters, even after working on one task for an ex-
tended period of time.
The main reason why I think any graduate school
would be ecstatic to have Nicole join their program is her
desire to be a part of the advancement of biomedical re-
search and laboratory analysis and her already acquired
skills. Nicole has proven to be a very capable and trus-
tworthy employee and when she approached me with his
own idea for optimizing processes in the lab, I was quick

to say yes. The amount of work that gets done increases

when Nicole is in the picture, she’s a very focused indivi-
dual and that quality tends to rub off on his colleagues.
She is enthusiastic, energetic, and has a very positive at-
titude that contributes to the workplace and will no doubt
have the same effect on any research setting.
Nicole is a very mature, well-rounded individual and
was a great asset to our laboratory. I am glad she’s willing
to take the time to extend her education. If she is accepted
into this program, Nicole will quickly prove herself as a
brilliant young woman who will no doubt go on to make
significant contributions to her chosen research field. Feel
free to contact me anytime to further discuss Nicole’s qua-
lifications.

To the Review Committee,

It is with great pleasure that I write to you in regard
to Thiago Sophisa’s acceptance into the PhD program in
Mechanical Engineering. I have been overseeing Thiago’s
work here at Manaus State University for almost 3 years
and I’ve seen firsthand his contribution to our Mechani-
cal Engineering program. I am currently his Masters` ad-
visor, and I highly recommend Thiago for your graduate
program.
I first met Thiago when we were working to improve
the program curriculum, and Thiago was the student re-
presentative of the committee. We spent 1 year working on
that project and Thiago showed the same maturity, orga-
nization, clear communication, responsibility, punctuali-
ty, and interest as the faculty working in the project. For
instance, Thiago researched the academic content of va-
rious Mechanical Engineering programs around the wor-
ld and made a complete survey of the challenges that the
students faced throughout the program.
In his last semester as an undergraduate student,
Thiago approached me asking for advice about graduate

school. Knowing from his previous PIs that he had been

skilled, methodical, and accountable in his previous pro-
ject, I knew he would be successful in any research path
he wished to follow. After being accepted in our master’s
programs in 2019, I became his advisor. We decided to
work with a focus on routing problem for the urban waste
collection. In this project we expect to develop a mathe-
matical programming model of the Vehicle Routing Pro-
blem in the collection of solid urban waste and evaluate
the uncertainties involved in the process, as well as, the
different types of exact solution methods. So far, we have
results showing that our mathematical programming mo-
del is compatible with the literature data in the solution
of benchmark problems. We are current assessing the un-
certainties of the model.
Thiago work is of great interest for our laboratory
because my colleagues and I just decided to include new
types of processes in our research field in which the optimi-
zation techniques would be interesting to apply. We trus-
ted that Thiago could be the pioneer of this kind of studies.
It was the first time we were doing a research with this fo-
cus, and the laboratory staff and even the faculty did not
have much experience in the problem solving through the
experiments. Thiago encountered initial difficulties and
had to seek solutions by himself. He also had to learn to
use GAMS (General algebraic Modeling System) software
by himself, a high-level modeling system for mathemati-
cal optimization. I praise him for such independence, res-
ponsibility, and accountability, and all the PIs in the labo-
ratory are pleased with his performance.
Thiago is a very mature, well-rounded individual and
has become a great asset to our department. We will be
sorry to see him leave, but we’re glad he’s willing to face
new challenges. If he is accepted into this program, Thia-

go will quickly prove himself as a brilliant young man

who will no doubt go on to make significant contributions
to his chosen field. Feel free to contact me anytime to fur-
ther discuss Thiago’s qualifications.

To the selection committee

Marcia was a full-time intern here at Biohardtech,
Inc. for seven months and has become a major asset to our
team. When approached to write a recommendation letter
to strengthen her application for the Master program at
WUS, I accepted without hesitation. As her mentor, Mar-
cia has my full support in her academic endeavors. She
has the initiative and enthusiasm to inspire those around
her and her determination to pursue a goal should be a
lesson to us all.
Biohardtech is a company focused on medical engi-
neer company, and our interns usually act in all areas
from administrative to field activities. Over the course of
my years as a Biomedical Engineer, I`ve worked directly
with many interns, and it is without reservation when I
say that Marcia has been one of the most outstanding in-
terns I’ve ever had. She exceled in diverse administrative
activities, such as Tasy system feeding, inventory control
via the Tasy system, archiving of process folders, survey
of production indicators and reports, showing pristine

organization a capacity of adjusting the daily tasks in ac-

cordance with the main goal of our company.
Starting an internship can be an intimidating expe-
rience, but Marcia completed this transition with ease.
She brings a certain tenacity to the company that seems
to light a spark under all of us. Her ideas are always well
thought out, and she is able to communicate with all the
team members flawlessly. She also did a great job with
our field team. She did rounds in the ICUs, delivering and
picking equipment, quoted equipment and supplies for
projects, contacted suppliers, prepared the entire process
of sending parts and equipment for maintenance. She had
a project with the hospitals to access the quality of how
the company was providing services to the hospital. Her
project gave the company good insights in how improve
our services and gave us a fresh look on how things in the
field were going.
Marcia has an incredible understanding of biotech-
nology means, methods, and techniques. Our clients are
in disbelief when they find out that she was still in college.
The way she explains her ideas and the manner in which
she goes about her work is similar to that of experienced
professional. For instance, she trained the medical team
on how to place a service order using the Tasy Software,
she also produced a newsletter on how to use the equip-
ment correctly to be distributed to the hospitals, and trai-
ned the healthcare professionals on how to use a mobile
oxygen cylinder that had been purchased by one hospital.
She still has a lot to learn, as biotechnology is a field
that is constantly changing while technology advances
and new techniques unfold, but she is an incredibly fast
learner, always eager to expand her horizons. Biotechno-
logy is all about problem-solving and curiosity and one of

Marcia’s most redeeming qualities is her ability to see the

solution beyond the known ones.
One of our main challenges was to reduce the number
of hospital service orders, in which we have to send our
technicians to the hospitals. Marcia contributed doing
trainings, in which the doctors and nurses learned to pla-
ce service orders correctly, making the service of our te-
chnical team faster. She also contributed with a manual
to alert medical team about procedures to increase equi-
pment performance and durability. Marcia is capable of
understanding the clients’ needs and converting those
ideas to paper and actions, her contribution strengthen
our relation with the hospitals.
Marcia continues to impress me with her performan-
ce and seemingly endless enthusiasm. She has incredib-
le creative thinking skills, able to analyze and critically
assess problems to find the most effective solution. Her
projects and ideas are extremely organized and well de-
veloped and she manages to see the big picture without
missing the smallest details. I highly recommend that you
consider Marcia into your Master`s program. I believe
that she will go on to accomplish great biotechnological
feats and I hope that Washington State University will
provide her with the chance to do so.
