Properties of Water (Demo)

On Back of Water Lab:

1. Why does pepper float?

Pepper floats because it is so light so that it does not break the surface tension

2. What happened to the pepper when detergent was added? Explain.

Once the detergent was added the pepper moved away from the detergent and it sinks. The
pepper sinks because the surface tension is lowered because of the detergent

3. Describe what happens when water is added to a paper towel. Why does this happen?
The water travels up the paper towel because of cohesion and adhesion, it travels
upward

4. What happens to the drop of water on the wax paper when more water is added?
It goes up higher and wont spread out because the wax paper repels it.
5. Why doesn’t water “stick” to the wax paper?
The wax is a lipid. And lipids are non polar, this non polar things repel the polar water.
6. What happens when soap (a detergent) is added to a drop of water?,
one side of it bonds with the polar side and the non-polar side does not bond. The soap
then bonds the two parts of the thing together, the non polar detergent bonds to the
non polar fat. The water spreads out.
