 Human by nature is inquisitive.

Philosophy
- Comes from two Greek words: philos (love) and Sophia (wisdom)
- The ancient Greeks used this term to refer to “love of wisdom.”
- They soon applied it to the study or discipline that uses human reason to investigate the
ultimate causes, reasons, and principles which govern all things.
- One of the distinct characteristics of Philosophy is that philosophers do not use laboratory tools
or undergo experiments. They use the human capacity to think alone.

Philosophers
- People engaged in philosophy

Two types of Thinking

 Holistic Thinking
- Refers to a perspective that considers large scale patterns in systems
- You look at the “big picture” when describing and analyzing a situation or problem
- To have an open mindset and an ability to get the general sense or impression regarding the
situation

 Partial Thinking
- It focuses on specific aspects of a situation
- It is an important component of analytical thinking
- An individual focuses on certain areas or aspects of a problem in order to understand it.

Example: Teenage Pregnancy

Partial Thinking:
 Poor me
 I won’t be able to give my child a good life.

Holistic Thinking
 I made a mistake, I got pregnant early.
 I accept my mistake, I will ask my parents for help and continue my study.
 I am looking at the big picture. I will not let my mistake define me.

 When the issues and problems are related to human experiences, philosophers urge us to use
holistic thinking.

Importance of Holistic Thinking

- A holistic perspective can enable a person to step back and consider the general aspects of a
certain problem. Ex. Being a hearing both sides of a story.
- A holistic view also gives rise to be more appreciative about life, as we are able to look at like in
its totality
Practical Uses of Philosophy in our lives

arguments and problems.

 A philosopher is a good communicator who can clearly and adequately present his or her ideas
