Third Person Rule: Spelling

THIRD PERSON SINGULAR RULE


Rule 1) For most verbs, +s

play --> plays live --> lives work --> works cook --> cooks

Rule 2) For verbs ending with -ch, -sh, -s, -x, -o + es

watch --> watches wish --> wishes kiss --> kisses fix --> fixes go --> goes

Rule 3) For verbs ending with consonant + y, drop the "y" and + ies

try --> tries fly --> flies

The Conditions Must Be

1) The subject must be he, she, or it (or other 3rd person singular subject)

2) The sentence must be affirmative

Verbs to give students to conjugate accordingly:

carry crash spell cross damage destroy

dry study fry push fish miss

match pick touch identify enjoy relax

worry pass pay

Follow up activity: have students make sentences with the above words
