TUTORIAL 3: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF REINFORCED BEAMS

DATE: 25/08/2021

INSTRUCTOR: MEERA RAGHUNANDAN

Problem 1: Analysis of Doubly Reinforced Beams

An RC beam has a width of 200mm and effective depth of 450mm. The effective cover for tension
and compression reinforcement are 50mm and 30mm, respectively. The beam is reinforced with
three bars of 20mm diameter bars in tension and three bars of 16mm diameter bars in
compression. Considering M20 concrete and Fe415 steel, calculate the ultimate moment carrying
capacity of the beam.

Problem 2: Design of Singly Reinforced Beams

A rectangular beam with a clear span of 5.0m is simply supported on supports of 200mm width
and is protected against mild exposure conditions. Design the beam to carry a characteristic live
load of 10kN/m. Assume shear ties are of 8mm diameter.
