My last holiday
I went to the beach with my boyfriend last holiday.
It was supposed to be a romantic trip but, to my disappointment,
the hotel we chose wasn’t what it seemed to be on the internet or
perhaps I was expecting too much.
The good thing is that there was a nice Italian restaurant there.
The hostess sat us at a table by the window from where we could see the
beach and the moon. She suggested we should order something from the Blog Files

seafood menu. We chose lobster and it was delicious. January (3)

Composition

My ancestors
My ancestors were from Lombardia, a region in the north of Italy.

My paternal great-grandfather arrived in Brazil when he was eighteen years

old. He came alone after his parents and his only brother died due to a fever that

killed many people in their town. During his trip to our country, he met my great-

grandmother and they got married after six months.

They had five children, four daughters and one son my grandfather.

My paternal grandmother came on a trip to Brazil and fell in love with my

grandfather. After she went back, they started writing letters to each other and

decided they wanted to get married, what they really did when my grandfather went

to Italy. Three months after the marriage, they moved to Brazil, where they had two

sons.

When my father and my uncle were already in college, my grandparents decided

to move back to Lombardia. My father and my uncle stayed here. After graduating,

my father spent six months backpacking through Europe. In France, he met a

beautiful Brazilian-Italian girl. They got married after five years and had two children

me and my sister.

What does it mean to be ambitious?

In my opinion, to be ambitious is to be strongly determined to achieve success, to have

power and money.

Different people have different ambitions, some people want to become famous, others

want to get married and raise a family and there are those who just want to succeed in their

profession.

So, ambitions vary according to each person’s desire.

A famous monument I visited

The Coliseum in Rome, Italy is one of the most fascinating
monuments I have ever visited.
It is an amphitheater, the largest in the world, and was built in
concrete and stone. The construction began in 72 AD and was completed
in 80 AD.
It is considered one of the greatest works of architecture and
engineering and was included among the new 7 Wonders of the World in

The Coliseum is now a tourist attraction in the Eternal city, January (3)

The best teacher I ever had

The best teacher I ever had was Mrs. Rose, who taught me English in high school.

She was my teacher for three years and I learned a lot from her.

Her classes were always interesting and fun, she knew her students so she knew

how to grab our attention and keep us focused. She used to contextualize the lessons

according to our experiences and expectations.

She was kind and supportive and, above all, one thing I will never forget is that

she helped me to overcome my sadness when I was a broken-hearted teenager.

Billy Jack’s wife

Fred worked in an office and lived alone in a small apartment .

He needed someone to clean his apartment. Billy Jack’s wife was
looking for work, so she started cleaning Fred’s apartment. She didn’t work
very hard so Fred’s apartment was always very dusty .
The dust made Fred cough a lot. One day Fred got

very angry and wrote her a message in the dust on his mirror . The message
said: “I’m coughing a lot, because everything is very dirty in this room.”
When he got home that evening everything was still very dusty . Again
Billy Jack’s wife hadn’t cleaned the apartment properly. Instead she had
left Fred some medicine for his cough.

Question
1. Where did Fred work? Where did he live? What did Fred need? Who was looking for a
job? How was Billy Jack's wife supposed to help Fred? Did she help him? What did Fred
do? Did it solve the problem? What did the housekeeper do?

My hometown
My hometown is a rich, and relatively big, city located in the southeast of Brazil.

It has about one million inhabitants, many industries, a strong commerce and

one of the best universities in our country.

One good thing about living in a city like my hometown is that you have access

to all the facilities of a big city, whilst some neighborhoods still offer that slower

and more relaxed pace of life typical of small towns. It’s still possible to see children

walking to school or playing with friends on the sidewalks. On the other hand, you are

just ten minutes away from a big mall or a good university.

My hometown, in my opinion, provides me many opportunities to grow as a

professional and a large offering of restaurants and entertainment.

I want to travel around the world, but I will always prefer to live here.

The President

One day, a father was having a serious talk with his

teenage boy. “Son, I’m not very happy with you. You
don’t study. You don’t work. And you sleep all day long . You are 15
years old . Do you know what Abraham Lincoln was doing

when he was 15?”

The son looked at his father and said: “I really

don’t know Dad, but wasn’t he the president of the United States when he
was your age ?”

Question
1. Why did the father feel it was important to have a serious talk with his son?
What lesson was he trying to teach his son? Did his son understand his message?
Does the story say what Abraham Lincoln was doing as a teenager?
Because his son wasn’t studying, working and just wanted to sleep all day long. He

was trying to teach his teenage boy that successful people work hard to get there. The story

didn’t say what Lincoln was doing as a teenager.

My next vacation
If I had enough money, I would go on an international trip in my
next vacation.
I would like to go to a nice city and live like a local for a couple of
weeks.
I would not only visit the famous landmarks and do typical tourist
things. I would take buses and subways, go to street markets, interact
with locals, speak their language, understand and live their culture. But,
Blog Files
of course, I would take a lot of pictures!
The thing is that I barely have money to pay my bills. So, I’ll just January (3)
stay home and try to clean up and organize my stuff.

The importance of Social Networking these days

There are many different reasons to justify the importance of social networking

these days.

Social networking enables us to keep in touch with friends and family more

easily. Through these sites, you can also communicate with lots of people all over the

world, connecting with those who have the same interests.

If you are looking for a job, it is important to know that companies and

interviewers usually search the social media to know more details about candidates.

Therefore, you must pay attention to what you publicize, to promote your skills in a

planned campaign, saying great and positive things about yourself.

The decision of what you will share and who will see your information is up to

you. Basically, you can share anything with anybody you want.

Like mother, like son

As Mother’s Day was coming soon Billy Jack decided to buy

his mother an unusual gift. He went to a pet shop and asked the
owner : “What’s the most unusual and expensive pet I can buy?”
“I have a Mynah bird that costs two thousand and seven hundred dollars. It’s
the only one in the world that knows passages from the Bible”, answered
the old man.
“It’s expensive but I’ll take it. Mom will enjoy hearing

passages from the Bible.” So he bought and sent it to his

mother. On the Monday following Mother’s Day he called her long distance.
“Did you get the bird I sent you?” he asked.
“Yes son.”
“How did you like it ?”
“It was delicious , son.”

Question
1. Who was Billy Jack buying a present for? Why did Billy Jack want to buy a special
present? Why did he think she would like the present? What did she do to the present?
Billy Jack was buying a present for his mother because it was Mother’s Day. He

thought she would enjoy an expensive bird because it was able to say passages from the

Bible. Billy Jack’s mother ate the bird and said it was delicious.

My greatest accomplishment
My college graduation was my greatest accomplishment.

I was the first in my family able to accomplish this level of education. And I’m

not talking about my parents and siblings, but all my relatives and ancestors.

I am the youngest of a poor family of five siblings. I grew up in a neighborhood

where children used to leave school after completing the first four years of basic

education. Thanks to my older siblings, who started working early, I had the

opportunity to keep on studying, with no interruption. Fortunately, they have never

given up and now we all are graduates.

When I think about my graduation, I think that it is something we accomplished

together. My family helped me, believed in me and stood by me.

I know they are proud of me and I am thankful for all their support and love.

New Business

An ambitious woman who liked business and had some money in the bank
decided to open a clothing store. On opening day she was very
glad to see her first customer come into the shop.
Remembering that first impressions are very important
for business , she quickly went to the
telephone and began a conversation supposedly with another
customer . She set up a time for her imaginary customer to come in and
try on some clothes, said good-bye, and then went to
help the man who was patiently waiting at the counter .
“What can I do for you, sir?” she said in a refined tone.“
If you don’t mind ma’am, I came here to install your telephone .”

Question
1. Was the woman in the story ambitious or not ambitious? Where did she keep her
money? What kind of business did the woman open? Why did she start a phone
conversation when a customer came in? What did she say to the customer who was
waiting? What did the customer say to her?
She was ambitious. She kept her money in the bank. She opened a clothing store.

When her first customer came in, she started a phone conversation to cause a good first

impression. After finishing her fake call, she asked to the customer who was waiting what

she could do for him. He said he was there to install her telephone.

Why do you think education is important?

I think education is important because it gives us opportunities to develop ourselves, to

become better citizens, to get better jobs and to improve our lives.

Much money is invested in education every year but, unfortunately, we face a lack of

good formal education in our country. Most of our public schools have bad infrastructure and

our teachers are badly paid and unprepared. These

investments must be more effective in order to change

this situation.

The last concert I’ve been to

The last concert I went to was a rock concert. It’s not my favorite
kind of music, but my daughter loves it and she asked me to take her
(since she couldn’t go alone).
The concert was amazing, I can’t lie, and the band was pretty good too.
My daughter knew all their songs by heart and I could see she was
very happy to be there. I also clapped my hands and screamed with the Blog Files
crowds, sometimes.

Someone who has made a difference in my life

When I was around ten years old, I used to play with my friends in the

neighborhood. Our parents used to work the whole day and we were completely free

to do whatever we wanted. As children, we just wanted to be outdoors, running,

playing and talking.

I remember there was a girl who lived on the next street, and had a better life

than ours. Actually, according to our thinking then, she was rich since she had a big

house and her grandmother was always home to take care of her. This girl had a little

sister and I once said something about the baby using the poor language I was used

to, something like a slang. As her grandmother was near us, she heard what I said and

she told me a little girl should never speak like that.

I know people can think this was nothing, but it really changed my life. I felt so

embarrassed and I thought to myself I would never speak like that again. I decided

I wanted to be more polite and I wanted to become an elegant woman. I am sure I

succeeded in that.

Sometimes small things we do can make a big difference in someone else’s life.

That grandmother has made a difference in my life, but she never knew that. She

would probably be proud of me now.

her favorite son is.

As I don’t have a favorite, I will talk about the first book I remember I enjoyed

reading, the first I read by myself when I was 6 years old. To illustrate my passion,

I must tell you that I still have this book here in my “library” _an entire wall with

books in my bedroom. The book is “Where’s Wally?”, by Martin Handford. I think

it’s a perfect book for kids, because the text is short and there is a series of detailed

illustrations that challenge the readers to find Wally hidden in the group. Wally

wears a red-and-white-striped shirt, a hat and glasses, what makes a little easier to

recognize him among the variety of things on the pages.

So, if you want to have some fun, even if you aren’t a child, “Where’s Wally” is a

good book for you.

There was a lady who tried to find a job for her teenage
boy. He was sixteen years old and had never worked before. The boy

hired the boy to load and unload cases of soft drinks. The boy spoke
with some difficulty , but that was no problem because he was able

to work hard. One day however , when the driver was trying to cross
a large and very busy avenue , he asked the boy: “Any cars coming from
your side, young man?” The boy answered “No, no, no cars coming.” The truck
driver started crossing the avenue when the boy said; “Only a big, big,
big red bus.”

Question

small problem? What kind of job was he hired to do?

Something I want to accomplish

I want to go to France and take the Boulangerie Program at Le cordon Bleu Paris

school. The Boulangerie Program is a bread baking professional course that trains

students in the techniques in bread making.

After finishing the course, I want to live and work in France for a period, so I can

acquire practical experience to open my own bakery when I come back home.

Although the Boulangerie Program is taught in French and translated into

English I want to learn French before going so I can practice and, perhaps, speak it

fluently by the end of the course. I believe it will be easier for me to find a job there if

I can speak their language.

The course, and so the cost of living in Paris, is quite expensive, therefore I have

already started saving money for this adventure.

I know that good advertisements are those able to convince people
to buy whatever they are selling. But some are so nice, or funny I just
want to watch them even if I will never buy the product.
I still remember one from a few years ago. It was a motorcycle

singing a song that basically said “I woke up, took off my pajamas and Blog Files

autobiography, since it’s the story of my life.

My first computer
The only thing I can say about my first computer is that I wasn’t the one who

bought it.

Since I remember, we always had computers at home. As a matter of fact, I

remember having one in my bedroom since I was a little boy.

It probably wasn’t the newest model, the most powerful or most modern, but it

was good enough for a boy who just wanted to play games or watch cartoons online.

There is no emotion around my first computer. I see it as a useful device that

helped me to do things, nothing more.

Something funny that happened to me

A few years ago, I went to a house party with two friends who were the only

people I knew there.

As soon as we arrived at the party, they went to talk with their friends and I

stayed alone for a while.

I got something to drink and stayed there by the wall, just observing what

people were doing.

Suddenly I noticed a man staring at me. Every time I looked, he was looking at

me. That started bothering me, so I greeted him from the distance and he did the

same. As he didn’t stop staring at me, I thought perhaps he knew me and decided to

talk to him.

When I started moving on his direction, and he was coming to meet me, my

friends came back and I realized that the man staring at me was actually myself at

the mirror.
