AN INTRODUCTION TO MARC {with USMARC examples drawn from RLIN) The great majority of online bibliographic databases in library use today are based on an approach to the recording of information known as Machine-Readabie Cataloging, or MARC. Developed in the late 1960s at the Library of Congress (LC), and continuously refined in the years since, MARC has seen wide acceptance in the library community, both nationally and internationally. There are numerous variants and implementations of MARC, all of which trace their origins to the LC system. The standard used in the United States is known as USMARC. The Research Libraries Network (RLIN), Carlyle, and GEAC are all MARC-based systems, although user-interfaces frequently serve to obscure this fact. The purpose of this document is to introduce Order Division staff to the USMARC formats for books (Part !) and serials (Part Il). Examples of RLIN records which might he encountered in acquisitians work are provided to help users locate and interpret bibliographic information in MARC records. Bibliographic data in USMARC records is organized into disorete picoco of information called fields. There are two basic types of fields. The first, control data fields--or so-called "fixed" fields--are primarily intended to aid computers in processing bibliographic records. Fixed fields (USMARC fielUs 005 (Inuuyli 008) are so named because they are comprised of a fixed number of alphanumeric characters. In each of Parts | and It, Section A describes the principal fixed data elements of valve In acquisitions work. Variable-length fields are the second type of field found in USMARC records. Most of the information found in variable-length fields replicates that found on traditional library catalog cards, i.e., author, title, imprint, physical description, series, added entries, etc. Each variable field is preceded by a numeric tag which identifies the information it contains. For example, field 245 carries the title, subtitle, and statement of responsibility; field 260 contains imprint data. Where several distinct but related data elements are present. variable fialds are divided into subfields. Subfields are identified by a lower-case alphabetic character (or sometimes @ number), and are preceded by a delimiter, which on most terminals appears as either a dollar ($) sign or a double-dagger (+). In the imprint (260) field, there are three primary subfields: $a Place : $b Publisher, $c Date. On many systems, $a is implicit (i.e., it doesn’t display, but is understood to be present). Ecotion B of cach Port identifies variable field tags often encountered in acquisitions and links these tags to the examples which follow. Rev, 1.1, 2 April 1992 Introduction to MARC, pg. 2.
