* In previous classes, you learned about physical and chemical properties of substances, and clues for recognizing when
a chemical reaction is occurring.

Purpose: To identify physical and chemical properties of substances.

Pre-activity Question:

1. Using your notes, identify 3 clues that a new substance has been formed through a chemical reaction. (3 marks)

Clue 1: The substance changes colour.


Clue 2: Bubbles form, telling you a new gas has been produced.
Clue 3: A new odour forms, telling you a new gas has been formed.

Materials: 2 scoopula, graduated cylinder, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), calcium chloride, phenolphthalein
solution, 3 Ziploc bags, water, safety goggles.
