DIRTY POLITICS

I. OBJECTIVES
 Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on offices, rottenness begins in his
conduct. No matter how principled a person, once in office little by little, their
morality disintegrates. Best reason for term limits for everyone in public
office.
 Politics had always been perceived to be dirty. In modern times, because of
the technology, more information, from all around the world and country, is
available for anybody to see. This makes it look like it is more dirty
nowadays.

II. INTRODUCTION
 Politicians are the most influential persons who put forward the aspirations of
the people of the country. It is the duty of politicians to make country free of
corruption and nepotism. They should work for the bringing the communal
harmony.

pull them down.
 COLONIAL MENTALITY

culture, art and products are inferior to those foreigners.
 CRAB MENTALITY
 Is plain envy, pushing Filipinos to be little and obstruct the efforts of
another even as they themselves would not work as hard unless it
would be advantage to them.

IV. DISCUSSION

DIRTY POLITICS

Politics in the country is “dirty” are due to the conduct of our elections:
1. It gives opportunity to unqualified and opportunistic individuals to run for
a public office.
2. It gives opportunity to candidates to manipulate the minds of the voters
through all sorts of gimmickry including: vote buying, false propaganda,
deception, or outright intimidation.
3. It promotes political dynasty, political patronage, and political
accommodation in exchange for contribution to campaign fund.
4. It entails so much expense on the part of the candidates, giving them an
excuse, when elected, to engage in graft and corruption to recover their
loses.
5. It leads to political killings and murder since rival candidates regard each
other as mortal enemies.

“Vox populi, vox Dei”- (Latin, 'the voice of the people is the voice of God')
 When voters are willfully ignorant of social issues and willingly
ignore the basic distinction between good and bad candidate.
ARISTOTLE said that candidates for public office should be
reasonably qualified for such position, that the responsibility of a
public office be entrusted to one who is not competent.

POLITICAL EDUCATION

Political education is important for us to advance forward as a nation. According

to BERNARD HARING “The heart of such education should be to activate the rational
citizen through freedom and for responsible freedom” (Free and Faithful in Christ,
380)”

It should:

1. It should teach the constitution and traditions of our people in comparison

with those of other people in another culture.
2. It should promote nationalism and patriotism.
3. It should teach morality
4. It should teach ethics

POLITICAL EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS (PUBLIC AND PRIVATE)

1. School children are taught “Civica”and “Pamayanan”or ”Makabayan”

2. Participate in flag ceremony, sing the national anthem, recite the pledge of
allegiance.

THOSE IN COLLEGE STUDY POLITICAL SCIENCE, PHILIPPINE HISTORY

AND LITERATURE, AND ENROLL IN PROGRAMS LIKE ROTC AND NSTP.

POLITICAL EDUCATION IN MASS MEDIA

1. Provides news and political information which contribute to the continuing

education of the public.
THE “KANYA-KANYA” SYNDROME

This distorted sense of public service is the cause of our political weakness as
nation. “The politics of self-interest” by Senator Sergio Osmeña.

EFFECTS OF “KANYA-KANYA”ATTITUDE

1. Can result in graft and corruption which drain the resources of the national
treasury and consequently, render public service inadequate and inferior.
2. There is poverty among the people because the politicians would rather work for
their self-interest by failing to adopt policies that would improve the lives of the
ordinary man in the street.

“One of the greatest injustices in the contemporary world consists precisely in this:
that one who possess almost nothing are many. It is the injustice of poor distribution
of the goods and services originally intended for all” by Pope John Paul II

UNPATRIOTIC TRAITS

1. Colonial Mentality
 Is the thinking that foreign talents and products are always better, and
that the local ones are poor of or no quality at all.
2. Crab Mentality
 Filipinos tend to possess this mentality especially when they feel
insecure. In a way, crab mentality also promotes an unhealthy
competition.
3. Inability to respect traffic rules
4. Plunder
5. Peddling, grandstanding, bribery, cheating, disinformation, tax evasion,
turncoatism, cronyism, and abuse of authority

SUBVERSION AND REBELLION

They are not necessarily immoral. They become immoral when:

1. It has no moral basis or justification

2. When the means employed are immoral such as lies, murder, vandalism or
damage to property
3. When it brings more harm than good.

Example of Subversion: Coup d’etat- Oak wood Mutiny against President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo.
Example of Subversion: “People Power” at EDSA- when President Joseph Estrada
was forced to leave the Malacañang

COUP D’ETAT

Coup d’etat is a mutiny of the military sector of government against dully

constituted authority. It was during the administration of President Cory Aquino and President
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“The use of arms to overthrow our duly constituted government is immoral and would be
tantamount to an unjust usurpation of power”- CBCP pastoral letter on February 05, 1990

However, such action may be justified under the following considerations.

1. There is a manifest long-standing tyranny against the fundamental rights of the people
and harm to the common good of the country.
2. When all peaceful means to resolve the problem have been tried and exhausted.
3. When there is a reason or well-founded hope of success.
4. When the good to be obtained is proportionate to the damage and harm that would be
inflicted.

V. CONCLUSION

Politics becomes dirty because of money and power. Most cases of fraud in politics are
manipulated by money. People are being bribed to cast their ballots in favor of the erring
candidate during election. Because of money and greediness for power, coercion, intimidation,
killing, cheating, and all sorts of dishonesty or unlawfulness are grieve issues during elections.
Those who go against the powerful and corrupt, usually find themselves in great trouble that may
sometimes end up with untimely death due to torture, ambush, and murder. Fear to stand for the
truth will totally mute the issue. It can never be cleaned unless there is God in the heart of every
individual. Dirty politics will always be a threat to freedom and democracy. Many nations are
suffering from the hands of dirty politicians. The economy is covered with anomalies inciting to
high crime rate and social unrest. And, the worst scenario that might probably come across
within the issue of injustice, is that anything legal will turn to illegal.
