Semantic Barriers

 Semantics is the study of a word, phrase or sentence.

 Words have different meanings in different contexts.
 The Receiver and the communicator may have different comprehension of the
same word, which may create misunderstanding.
 Some of the Semantic Barriers are-
 POOR EXPRESSION-Poor Pronunciations, Poorly chosen words, Careless
Omissions, Awkward Sentence Structure, Inadequate Vocabulary.
 TECHNICAL WORDS-Technical Jargon for a person not belonging to a specific
field f expertise may convey a different meaning.
 FAULTY TRANSLATION- Being Multilingual, we need to translate from one
language to other which needs high level linguistic skills.

Cultural Barriers

 Culture is the behavioural feature of a particular group.

 Social Beliefs, Values and Custom of a Group, each having its own
characteristics.
 Cultural Barriers can be as-
 INTERCULTURAL DIFFERENCES-Each Culture has its Customs, Traditions,
Beliefs and Values. Same idea in words can be interpreted incorrectly.
 RELIGION- Every religion has its own Traditions and Codes. Dress, Food and
Social Behaviour have many restrictions, resulting in Barriers.
 ETNOCENTRISM- Ethno is related to ethnic group. Consideration of one group
to be superior than other can be an obstacle in understanding a message.

Organizational and Mechanical Barriers

 Communication happens both internally as well as externally and hindrance in

this is Organizational Barrier. Organizational Barrier can be as –
 STRUCTURE-Complex Structure with several layers of Supervision results in
delay and distortion of the message.
 RULES AND REGULATIONS- Stringent Rules and Regulations without any
flexibility, can be a barrier.

 Mechanical Barriers –Mechanical Equipment between the sender and the

receiver because of long distance is Mechanical Barrier. This can be-
 BREAKDOWN-Any failure in equipment.
 IMPROPER CHOICE-Wrong choice of equipment can lead to miscommunication.
