For my research paper thesis, I will be using qualitative method.

For the purpose of this research I will review the records of patients prescribed

intravenous fluids either as inpatient or outpatient.

 Policy and regulation

I will also request for the availability of or presence of institutional policy guidelines for

intravenous medications or therapy including: -

Particularly identification of high-risk medications and the availability of the action plan

to minimize the risks

Availability of up-to-date protocols and procedures, easiness of its accessibility for

prescribing, preparing, and administering intravenous treatments

Evidence of training and supervision of staff charged with the responsibility of

administering intravenous therapy

 Patient assessment and preparation

Are patient’s prescription charts and notes reviewed before initiation of or administering

intravenous therapy for evidence of allergies, drug interactions and incompatibilities?

Are patients educated, consent obtained (voluntarily and freely), and patient fully

involved in the decision involving his treatment with intravenous fluids?

The availability of equipment such as the vascular access device (VAD) and the ease of

accessing the equipment

Are the equipment checked for integrity?

Are the IV solutions or medication for expiry, leakage, and clarity?

 Implementation

Infection control measures

Hand hygiene done

Injection site disinfected with chlorhexide and alcohol

Sterile gloves worn

Sterile drapes applied

Masks goggle or face guard used

 Dressing management

Types of dressing applied and the management of the dressing

How often the dressing is changed?

 Dosage calculations

Correctness of calculations and the rate of infusion calculation

Seven rights of drugs administration followed i.e. right patient, right drug, right

prescription, right dose, right time, right route, right reason, and right documentation

 Monitoring and reporting of complications

Are there records of adverse drug reactions following intravenous therapy?

Are there records of complications of intravenous therapy such as infections, air

embolism, and heart failure?

 Training and availability of Information Education Communication (IEC)

Evidence of checklist availability as a reminder for IV infusion therapy

Evidence of regularly training of on IV therapy

Evidence of charts and short outline information on IV therapy
