) Use your experience, identify a product or service delivery

system, and draw flowchart for the System. Also estimate time to
accomplish each activity. Identify points where something waits for
service or held in work-in-process inventory and total flow time.
Identify bottlenecks and suggest what could be done to improve
the overall process.

ANS:

Product Delivery system:

Flowchart for Pizza delivery system

Adding
Base Wrap/
Preheat Sauce and Cool
Order Oven preparation toppings Bake Deliver

1 min 10mins 2.5 mins 5 mins 20mins 3 mins 10mins

Total time flow: 51.5 minutes

Bottleneck: 20 minutes (bake time)
Suggestions:
● Making enough equipments available.
● Keeping stock of the ingredients required for preparing the pizzas.
● Meeting the plating requirements for order placed.
● Availability of enough manpower for wrapping/delivering the order.

2.) A telephone call center uses three customer service

representatives (CSRs) during the 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. time
period. The standard service rate is 3.0 minutes per telephone call
per CSR. Assuming a target labor utilization rate of 80 percent, how
many calls can these three CSRs handle during this half-hour
period?

ANS:
Service rate = 3 minutes/call or 10 calls/30 minutes/CSR
Utilization(U)= Demand Rate/ [(Service Rate) (Number of Servers)]
0.80 = DR/ [(10 calls/30minutes/CSR) (3 CSRs)
Therefore, DR = (0.80) (30)
= 24 calls/30 minutes.

3.) An express checkout line at a grocery store takes an average of

3 minutes to ring-up a customer’s order. On average 6 customers
are in the checkout line. What is the average number of customers
per hour that are processed in the checkout line?

ANS:
Work in process = 6 (customers in check-out line)
Work in process (WIP) = Throughput * Flow Time
=R*T
6=R*3
Therefore,
R = 2 customers per minute or 120 customers per hour.

4.) A small assembly line for the assembly of power steering pumps
needs to be balanced. The precedence diagram is shown below. The
demand is forecasted to be 1600 units. The company operates for 8
hours every day and 5 days in a week.
How would the line be balanced using:
(a) Longest (largest) processing time first rule (you have done it in the
class session)?
(b) If you follow shortest (smallest) processing time rule, what will be the
assembly line balancing solution?
(c) Which solution you assess better, (a) or (b)?

ANS:
A) Assembly line balancing
Total time = 0.5 + 0.7 + 0.1 + 0.2 + 0.4 + 0.4 + 0.8 + 0.6 + 0.5 = 4.2 mins
Cycle time = (5 * 8 * 60)/1600 = 1.5 mins
Minimum number of workstations = Total Time/Cycle Time
= 4.2/1.5
= 2.8, approximately 3
Minimum number of workstations required are 3.
Workstation Tasks Total time Idle time
1 B, A, C, D 1.5 0
2 E, G 1.2 0.3
3 H, F, I 1.5 0
TOTAL 4.2 0.3

Efficiency = total time / total time available

= 4.2 / (1.5 * 3)
= 0.9333 or 93.33%

B) Total time = 0.5 + 0.7 + 0.1 + 0.2 + 0.4 + 0.4 + 0.8 + 0.6 + 0.5
= 4.2 mins
Cycle time = (5 * 8 * 60)/1600 = 1.5 mins
Minimum number of workstations = total time / cycle time
= 4.2/1.5
= 2.8, approximately 3
Minimum number of workstations required are 3.

Workstation Tasks Total time Idle time

1 A, B, D, C 1.5 0
2 F, G 0.8 0.7
3 E, H 1.4 0.1
4 I 0.5 1
TOTAL 4.2 1.8

Efficiency = total time / total time available

= 4.2 / (1.5 * 4)
= 0.7 or 70.00%

C) As the efficiency of the longest processing time first (93.33%) is

greater than that of the shortest processing time (70.00%), in this case,
the longest processing time first is a better assembly line solution.
5.)  You have been asked to set up an assembly line to assemble a
computer mouse. The precedence network is shown below; task times in
minutes are given in parentheses. There are 480 minutes of assembly
time per shift and the company operates one shift each day. The
required output rate is forecasted to be 60 units per shift.
a.) Balance the assembly line using the longest processing time rule.
State the tasks associated with each workstation, total time, and idle
time.
b.) What is the assembly line efficiency?
c.) Is your assembly line balance solution good or bad? What criteria do
you used to make this assessment? Explain .

ANS:
A)
Assembly time = 480 minutes per shift
Forecasted output rate = 60 units per shift
Cycle time = 480/60
        = 8 minutes
Minimum no. of workstation = Sum of task times/ Cycle time
= 32/8
 = 4

Assembly line

Workstation  Tasks  Total time  Idle time
1  2 4 3  8  0
2  1 6  7  1
3  5  6  2
4  7  3  5
5  8  8  0
  Total  32  8

B) Efficiency = Total Time/ Total Time Available

=32/40
= 0.8 or 80%
C) Efficiency of this assembly line balance solution is 80%. The desired
efficiency targeted in most of the cases is around 80% to 90% but in this
case the total idle time is same as the cycle time which affects the
efficiency of the process as a workstation is left without operation .
