SCIENCE
 The word “science” is derived from the latin word”scientia” which
means “knowledge”.
 According to Compsell, Science is body of useful and practical
knowledge ,it is a pure intellectual activity.
 According to the Columbia dictionary “Science is an accumulated &
systematized learning, in general usage restricted to natural
phenomenon.”
 According to ‘Science Manpower Project’, “Science is a cumulative and
endless series of empirical observation which result in the formation of
concepts & theories, with both concepts & theories being subject of
modification in the light of further empirical observation.
WHAT IS AN OBJECTIVE
 Objective is a part to aim – a narrower term when
compared to aim.
 It can be defined as- objective is a point or an end view
of possible achievement in terms of what a student is
able to do when the educational system is directed
towards educational aims.
 It indicates the direction of the pupil’s growth.
 It provides link between pupil’s, teachers, parents by
focusing with intended outcomes of learning.
OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING SCIENCE
Education is a process of bringing about changes in an
individual in a desired direction. It is a process of
helping a child to develop his potentialities to the
maximum and to bring out the best from within the
child. To bring about these changes we teach them
various subjects at different levels of school. Science as
subject is included in the school curriculum from the
very beginning.
Before taking any decision about teaching science we
should pose certain questions to ourselves, such as,
• Why do we teach them science?
• What are the goals and objectives of teaching science?
• What changes does science teaching bring about in
the behavior of the students?
Before answering these questions let us first define
goals/aims and objectives.
 A goal is the ultimate target in life which an individual
tries to achieve. Goals are basically long term
objectives which require a long period of time to be
achieved. Goals are Broad and general.
For example, development of scientific attitude, to
become a responsible citizen etc.
 Objectives are short term targets which are specific
and could he achieved in a single day or single hour.
Objectives are Narrower and specific. Vary from
subject to subject.
For example, acquiring knowledge about some specific
things within a pre-specified time limit, would come
under the purview of objectives
General Objectives for Science
Teaching
The specific objectives under cognitive, affective and
psychomotor domain are clubbed into three, two and
one respectively for the purpose of formulating general
instructional objectives for science teaching.
These are as follows.
1. Knowledge, Understanding and Application are from
the cognitive domain.
2. Interest and Attitude are from the affective domain
and
3. Skill are from the psychomotor domain.
TAXONOMY OF EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
 Based on the above clarification, objectives related to
education as a whole, are known as “educational objective”.
In the words of B.S. Bloom “By educational objectives, we
mean explicit formulations of the ways in which students
are expected to be changed by the educative process, that
is, the ways in which they will change in their actions”.
The formulation of educational objective is a matter of
careful choice on the part of the teachers and
administrators. The following factors are involved:
 The needs and capabilities of the pupils.
 The specific demands of social environment
 The nature of the subject teacher.
Educational objectives are classified into three broad
categories or domains.
 Cognitive domain
 Affective domain
 Psycho-motor domain
Some of the objectives of teaching science
in the school curriculum should be directed
towards:
 Better understanding of the nature of science.
 Acquisition of skills.
 Development of scientific attitudes:
 Open mindedness
 Curiosity, Tolerance
 Honest doubt
 Respect for other’s point of view
 Critical observation and thought
 Freedom from superstition
 Judgment based on scientific facts
 Training in scientific method
 Development of interest and appreciation:
 Teaching of science should enable a student to develop
and enjoy personal interests, some of which are related to
science.
 Students should be encouraged by including in science
curriculum activities like science clubs, exhibitions,
experiments etc.
 Helping the students fit themselves better in the
society : The science curriculum gives extensive practice
in working together both in large and small groups thus
promoting cooperation and tolerance, besides enhancing
self confidence, self reliance, among students.
 Helping students develop suitable career interest
CONCLUSION
 Science has acquitted new meaning and the scope in
recent years. The reasons for introducing science as a
compulsory subject in the school curriculum are
mandatory. The inter-disciplinary approach in science
teaching is being emphasized in this part.
 The bloom’s taxonomy of educational objective under
the three domains-cognitive, affective and psycho-
motor has been discussed.
 A Science teacher must play an active role so as to
justify his role and also to do justice with the subject.
Until and unless he/she does not displays the above
mentioned qualities , he/she will not be able to
achieve the aims and objectives of science teaching as
outlined in the national document
