Assignment I

EEZG 521 - Physico-Chemical Treatment Principles and Design for Wastewater Systems
50 % weightage

1. The average flowrate at a small municipal wastewater-treatment plant is 28000 m3/d. The
highest observed peak daily flowrate is 62000 m3/d. Design rectangular primary clarifiers
with a channel width of 6.5 m. Use a minimum two clarifiers. Calculate the scour
velocity to determine if settled material will become resuspended. Estimate the BOD and
TSS removal at average and peak flow. Use an overflow rate (OR) of 42 m3/d at average
flow and side water depth of 4 m.
2. Determine the settling velocity of a sand particle with a specific gravity of 2.65 and a
diameter of 1 mm. Assume the Reynolds number is 275.
3. Enumerate various contaminants/impurities generally present in the wastewater. Identify
two organic and inorganic contaminants which are usually present in higher
concentrations as compared to other pollutants and discuss briefly about their analysis
procedures.
4. How total solids present in the wastewater can be classified into with the help of a simple
flowsheet? How particle size measurement data can augment designing better wastewater
treatment systems? Discuss briefly about turbidity based measurement.
5. Give your views about the current state of municipal wastewater treatment in India. What
do you think as major challenges and how they can be overcome to improve the
discharge standards of CETP.
