Every day we can see murders, fraud, theft, vandalism, riots, and other types of crimes in the

news. I wish the reality was different but it isn’t. I could describe crime in Peru in just two
words: violence and delinquency.

For years, crime in Peru has increased alarmingly and this happens because the punishments
that are imposed are repressive. In other words, they don’t care about the resocialization of
the convicted person, only compliance with the sentence or sanction is important. I wish the
judges and all those involved in criminal proceedings were more aware that the simple act of
locking a person behind bars without paying attention to the psychological aspect to obtain
answers and possible alternative solutions is a mistake. The punishments they receive are
mostly imprisonment and fines according to the seriousness of the crime. If only prison
overcrowding hadn’t existed, things would be easier to resolve. However, the fact that most
people in our country see this as something normal is troubling. These methods used to
deprive a person of their freedom from committing more criminal actions are not a long-term
solution. On the contrary, criminals see it as a mere pause and that sooner or later they will get
out of jail. I wish these types of people could change that way of thinking.

In my opinion, a perfect system to fight crime in our country is one where the police and
judicial forces avoid at all costs that the prison becomes a school of crime. If only the
administration of justice in Peru were more efficient and analyze each case without taking it
lightly.
